Delivered in May 1958 and flew with 206, 203 and 201 squadrons for varying periods before joining 120 Squadron at Kinloss in September 1963, operating with them until October 1965 when the aircraft went to Langar for modernisation and upgrade works. Returned to 203 Squadron at Luqa in September 1966 and was struck off charge in September 1971 following discovery of severe rodent damage due to an infestation of rats! Subsequently broken up at Safi, Malta.

In 2001 sold as G-BZXZ.

Imagine flying a strategic air raid in an Avro 504. It happened in November 1914 when three machines took off from Belfort with four 20-lb bombs each to attack the Zeppelin works in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, 200 km (125 miles) away. Although the raid was an RNAS affair, the planes were RFC serials 873, 874 and 875. RFC 179 failed to get airborne. Some of the pilots had never flown a 504 before. 873 was shot down and Squadron Commander Edward Briggs was taken prisoner. The raid caused little damage, but was successful in that the Germans took extensive defensive measures. Belfort - Fontaine was then an airship station. On display at IWM Duxford. This Lancaster was the first of a batch of 300 to be built by Victory Aircraft in Canada. Test flown in 1944, it went to Britain in 1945 and was assigned to No. 428 Sqn RCAF. It returned to Canada in June 1945 for conversion to maritime reconnaissance. After retirement the Lancaster was put on public display in 1965. It was sold and shipped to the UK in 1984. Sold in 1986 to the Imperial War Museum, it was restored over an eight-year period. It has an unfaired ventral turret and the H2S fairing for the downward radar is visible. A Dambuster mine lies below.

In use as a ground training frame (8395M) at Cosford before joining the RAF Museum in 1978. Deteriorated due to corrosion and moved to the Northolt fire dump in 1992. Remains moved to Sabrewatch Ltd in East Grinstead in 1998 and scrapped in 2007. The nose was reported to survive in the Ashford area in 2017.

The aircraft was salvaged following a forced landing at Orfordness, Suffolk, on November 11, 1940. It was used by the Air Fighting Development Unit until autumn 1942 when it went into storage. Now part of the RAF Museum collection. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

L1951 was forced down after being damaged in a dogfight with He115 seaplanes. It was recovered and repaired. Suffered three subsequent accidents. The last, when it struck a hedge on takeoff at Chipping Sodbury on February 2, 1942, proved to the end of the road for L1951. At the time of this non-fatal accident it was with a training unit. Fell into British hands on November 26, 1941 when its crew became disorientated following an abortive anti-shipping sortie in the Irish Sea and landed by mistake at Chivenor, Devon. We were invited to visit the Hercules ramp of Lyneham on a very wet day. After this shot we took shelter inside the aircraft resulting in picture 68450.

Between 1976 and 1988 this Sycamore was gate guard at RAF Shawbury. It moved to several locations afterwards and was scrapped in 2000
