This is not the original 82-1070 'Spirit of Ohio', rather one of two additional aircraft Northrop constructed without engines or instruments for fatigue testing. This example was used for stress testing on the airframe (it was discovered that the wings could withstand 161% of the design specs stress load before cracking) before being retired to the National Museum of the USAF for display.

The Spad XVI was a two-seat version of the very successful single-seat Spad fighters of WWI. An otherwise undistinguished aircraft, this Spad XVI on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center is significant because of it's association with Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell. Six Spad XVIs were acquired from the French in August 1918 and this one became Mitchell's personal aircraft.

This Tweety Bird was one of eleven preproduction A-models. Subsequently all were converted to the B-version with this particular T-37 serving as an instructional airframe and earning the GT-37B designation. This Utah ANG aircraft was retired to AMARG during April 08 where it is stored with the PCN/Inventory No. AACA0203. These a/c are stored without engines and with the extra weight of the refuelling boom the centre of gravity moves considerably aft, hence the need for a tailstand.
