The original prototype Constellation was converted to the prototype L-1049 Super Constellation and flew in varied test programs. The aircraft was fitted with an Allison 501D turboprop in the number 4 engine position during the Electra development program. During the testing period Lockheed employees referred to the aircraft as the "Elation", a combination of the names Electra / Constellation. Photo fromLockheed Aircraft Corp.

This aircraft was bailed from the USAF to Lockheed for use in Operation Hourglass, as part of the Electra program. Although the Allison 501D engine was proving reliable, Lockheed flew the aircraft for 30 days on a carefully planned 'airline' schedule in order to test its durability for commercial operations, which involved much longer operational days and multiple daily flight cycles, than the engine had thus far experienced in military use. The Blume 502 was developed from the Blume 500 in the late 1950's by Walter Blume. The aircraft wasn't very succesful and only 2 examples were built. On May 16, 1982, the aircraft was damaged beyond repair in an emergency landing at Langenlonsheim. However, a restoration project started in 1999 and the aircraft was restored to flying condition in 2016 at Koblenz-Winningen. Early 2017 the aircraft took to the skies again, only to suffer a gear collapse upon landing. The aircraft was repaired and airworthy again at the time of the upload. Photo from W. Muntinga

Seen at Chanute AFB, IL in 1957 after being retired from active service with the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth AFB, Rapid City, SD. The red tail band is the color of the 718th Bomb Squadron, the unit to which I was assigned. I may have flown on this aircraft but can't be sure, because our flight records did not have tail numbers listed.
