A view that became all too familiar for US Army aviation although it did not deploy the H-34 to Vietnam. The C-46 in the background, N9885F, seems to date the photo in 1957 before it was painted as a Delta Air Freighter. Photo by: Joe Scherschel / Life

This aircraft was bailed from the USAF to Lockheed for use in Operation Hourglass, as part of the Electra program. Although the Allison 501D engine was proving reliable, Lockheed flew the aircraft for 30 days on a carefully planned 'airline' schedule in order to test its durability for commercial operations, which involved much longer operational days and multiple daily flight cycles, than the engine had thus far experienced in military use. The Blume 502 was developed from the Blume 500 in the late 1950's by Walter Blume. The aircraft wasn't very succesful and only 2 examples were built. On May 16, 1982, the aircraft was damaged beyond repair in an emergency landing at Langenlonsheim. However, a restoration project started in 1999 and the aircraft was restored to flying condition in 2016 at Koblenz-Winningen. Early 2017 the aircraft took to the skies again, only to suffer a gear collapse upon landing. The aircraft was repaired and airworthy again at the time of the upload. Photo from W. Muntinga

The Blume 502 was developed from the Blume 500 in the late 1950's by Walter Blume. The aircraft wasn't very succesful and only 2 examples were built. However, a restoration project started in 1999 and the aircraft was restored to flying condition in 2016 at Koblenz-Winningen.
