KLM served Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland province, in 1938-39 and 1946-49. On 27 December 1947, captain Robinson and pilot Kroon aborted their landing here due to fog but hit the spire of a church which took off 3.5 metres (11 feet) of the left wing. Stored at Arlington since 1979. Restoration started in 1993, and this C-47 was then painted in these USAAF markings, with its original serial 43-15728. The name is only carried on the left side. As can be seen in this photo, by 2006 its condition left much to be desired. Despite that, it was still present at Arlington by mid 2018.
The aircraft still has multiple unusual vents in the fuselage roof and belly, dating back to its time with Amerine Turkey Breeding Farms in the 1960s, when it was used to transport large numbers of live birds. These produce a lot of heat and need appropriate ventilation to survive.

A most rare aircraft in my collection, 9U-BRY formerly of the Burundi Air Force. The tiny African air force operated two of these beauties. 9U-BRY had been withdrawn from use by 2003, but UN employees saw this (or sistership 9U-BRZ) flying up to 2006.

Ex I-COFR, N711TD. Was acquired by the museum in the 1990s and painted as N242AG. This is the reg the aircraft carried in the 1950s when it was frequently used by actor Clark Gable and several other celebrities of that time. Still had a plate inside the cockpit which read "Douglas DC-3 N711TD".

Apart from other Indonesian operators, this aircraft also previously operated with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines both as PH-TCT (1946-1954) and PH-DAT (1954-1961). Prior to that it was with the Royal Air Force as KG603 and the US Army Air Force as 42-93424.

A most rare duo of aircraft in my collection, the left one is C-47A 9U-BRZ, and on the right is 9U-BRY c/n 9369. The Burundi Air Force once operated these two beauties. According to the Dakota bible, both had been withdrawn from use by 2003, but UN employees saw at least one flying up to 2006.

N67588, the DC-3 fuselage in the middle of this photo, was damaged in an emergency landing at Point McKenzie, AK on 24 May 1998, after it ran out of fuel. It was dismantled and trucked to Anchorage and was stored there. It was still there by 2007, but gone by 2011, fate unknown.
The aircraft on the right is C-119 N9027K, also a long-term PANC resident. Stored at Anchorage prior to 1989, and still there by 2017, almost 30 years later. On the left is an operational DC-3, N50CM.

VH-TAW at Cambridge just before airline operations were transferred to the new Hobart airport. The grasshopper on the fin is a relic of the aircraft's use as a sprayer during a locust plague in southern NSW and northern Victoria in November-December 1955.
