Used for war bonds tours of Australia and New Zealand. Famous for being flown under the Sydney Harbour Bridge on October 22, 1943. Ran off runway on landing at Evans Head on October 26, 1943 sustaining severe damage, but was repaired. Later used to train Qantas Lancastrian pilots. Scrapped in 1948 after the RAAF decided to preserve its other Lancaster, W4783 (A66-2), because unlike Queenie, it was a combat veteran. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

A peek into a hangar of the imperial and royal Austro-Hungarian army at its Wiener Strasse aerodrome, now Wiener Neustadt - Ost. The Lohner C.I was an armed version of the Lohner B.VII reconnaissance type. It was rejected for frontline use and issued to training units. Photograph part of a series that must have been taken in 1917 or 1918, not in 1915 as indicated by the source. Photo from: Fortepan

Plane took part in Pentacost rally of Austrian Aero Club, to which it was registered. The pilot is named as Prince Kinsky. Aircraft built in 1934, G-ACSE apparently not taken up. A-145 to OE-ABC in new Austrian register. To D-EABC of German Aero Club after Anschluss. Apparently sold to Airwork as G-AFZG just before WWII. Impressed as AW156 for No 24 Sqn. On a flight from Hendon to Brize Norton on 30 January 1942, the Leopard Moth collided with Oxford N6431 and both aircraft crashed into the ground near Buscot Park, killing all three occupants. One of three Fw 200s ordered in early 1939 by Dai Nippon Kabushiki Kaisha (Japan - Manchuria Aviation Company). Not delivered and used 'briefly' by Lufthansa, then to KG 40 of the Luftwaffe. Destroyed by the RAF at Bordeaux - Mérignac on 13 April 1941, so the 1940 dating of this photo is probably accurate. Photo from: Fortepan

The twilight of Sabena's passenger helicopter operations. The airline had sold its S-58s but acquired two others from Chicago Helicopter Airways to carry out the remaining services. N869 and N878 became OO-SHP and OO-SHQ, respectively, but flights ceased on 1 November 1966. The Brussels heliport closed immediately. Photo by: Eszter Pozsgay / Fortepan

The Fiat BR series of light bombers first flew in 1919 and the updated BR.3 was still being built in the early 1930s. This plane, named 'Justice for Hungary' in Italian, was donated to Hungary following the fatal crash in Rome of the Lockheed Sirius HA-AAF Justice for Hungary. As NR115W, the Sirius had flown across the Atlantic in July 1931. Photo from: Fortepan

André Japy made it from Paris to Norway and back in one day, in 15 hours of flying in his new C.600 Aiglon (eaglet). He made even longer one-day return flights from Paris to Oran and from Paris to Tunis in September 1935. In December he flew to Saigon in three days, but crashed F-ANVB in Baghdad during his return flight. Japy had built in three extra fuel tanks. Two other C.600s, F-ANSI and F-ANSK, were similarly modified for female pilots Andrée Dupeyron and Elisabeth Lion, and these two received the C.610 designation. Norway ordered four Ca.310 bombers in 1938. After an eventful delivery flight from Italy, 503 was the first one to arrive at Kjeller on 13 October. Asbjørn Barlaup took a series of photos of 503 and this is almost certainly that same aircraft even though the serial is unreadable. The same airframe was employed on an Oslo - Gothenburg - Copenhagen night mail service for three months in 1939, registered as LN-DAK. Photo by: Asbjørn Barlaup / Nasjonalbiblioteket (Norway)

Most Piper Super Cubs arriving in the New Zealand in the 1950s were for cropdusting. ZK-BNM however was delivered to the Canterbury Aero Club at Harewood (Canterbury International) airport. The C-124 in "Arctic" markings in the background would have been transiting Christchurch for Antarctica. Christchurch is a resupply base for the Americans' Antarctic program. 'Airfield in Milan.' This is assumed to be Taliedo because I-UBER, ex MM55146, was registered to the Taliedo branch of RUNA (Regia Unione Nazionale Aeronautica) in 1936. Linate airport largely replaced this airfield in 1938, although the Caproni works remained at Taliedo. Photo by: Willem van de Poll / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The rear aircraft is 51-1828, the YRF-84F Thunderflash prototype, first flown in February 1952. As you can see, the second YF-84F Thunderstreak, 51-1345, also had side intakes. These gave some loss of thrust and were not adopted on the basic F-84F. Seen flying near Edwards AFB, both aircraft still have the old canopy of the Thunderjet. Photo from: US Air Force

The early Macchi flying boats were inspired on a captured Austrian Lohner L. The M.3 of 1916 was successful and the Italian navy used it in every role. After WWI, two M.3s were used by Ad Astra Aero for sightseeing and charter flights, with two passengers riding in front of the pilot. CH-15, painted red, is seen over Zürich. The Zürichhorn seaplane station is just outside the photo on the right side. Photo dated 1919 by the source but CH-15 was not registered until December 1919.
