This is what can happen if you try to land an Electra with the landing-gear up. When, on 1 March 1999, N285F touched down at Shannon with gear up, went around with difficulty and made it back to the airport for a landing on its undercarriage, the No. 3 prop and parts of the No. 3 engine detached from the aircraft, some parts passing through the fuselage on the way. On landing, only the No. 1 engine was still producing full power. Note the damaged No. 2 and No. 4 prop also.

Delivered to Western Air Lines as N7137C in 1959. To Johnson International Airlines in 1972 who merged into Evergreen International Airlines in 1975. Reregistered as N5558 in 1981 but not applied and used for parts at Marana. Later scrapped.

The second Electra registered as N5539. Delivered to Pacific Southwest Airlines as L-188C N171PS in 1959. To Holiday Airlines as N971HA in 1968. Back to Pacific Southwest Airlines as N171PS in 1975 then to Evergreen International Airlines as N5539 in 1979 and converted to an L-188C(F) freighter. To Channel Express in 1990 and reregistered as G-CEXS in 1992. To Air Spray as C-GZCF in 2003 and converted to a firebomber. Damaged in a wheels up landing at Red Deer, AB in 2019. Still there in 2024.

Delivered new 9th February 1961 as L-188A Electra N9646C for Western Airlines.. 1969 converted to L-188A(F) freighter, still for Western. August 18th 1972 LN-MOI Nordic Air. LN-MOI bought by Fred. Olsen August 20th 1973, and rr to LN-FOH August 28th 1973. Op. by FOF in ex Nordic colours until repainted to FOF colours second half of 1974. Repainted to these new white FOF colours in 1985. March 1988 it was painted black for the "Air de Cologne" project by SAS Cargo.. FOF colours 1990, flew with TNT stickers in 1990 and 91, FOF cs until wfu 01-1997. OE-ILA 03-1998, C-GLBA 07-2007.

In open storage at Red Deer, Air Spray's engineering base, still carrying the basic colours of Mandala Airlines. Delivered new to Northwest Airlines in 1959 as N123US. Joined San Diego Padres as team transport in 1969. Transferred to West Coast Properties Inc of San Diego - Air California - in 1971 as N123AC. Exported to Indonesia for Mandala Airlines in 1979 as PK-RLD. Acquired by Air Spray in 1995 as part of a firebomber conversion programme, re-registered C-FVFI. Eventually only used by Air Spray as a source of spares.

slide scan from the NK collection. - Great Northern operated a total of seven Electras between 1976 and 1980, including two aircraft which were leased from Zantop. This ex-Western Airlines aircraft kept its registration with several follow-on operators and was withdrawn from service in 1989. The last airline to use it was Spirit of America Airlines; the Electra was scrapped at Greenville in 1993.
