A65-102 was the largest entrant in the Benson and Hedges trans-Australian air race. The RAAF disposed off it in 1980. It was ferried around the country to different locations but it would be 1990 before it was formally registered, as N65388. In 1995 it became VH-SPY and then returned to its US identity in 1999. Severe corrosion was found during an inspection at Cairns in 2001, and it was permanently grounded.

A65-94 was at one stage earmarked to be a target for cluster bombs. But that plan was dropped and it flew on with the RAAF for several more years. The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society at Wollongong bought it in 2000 and now operate it as VH-EAF.

Unit: 34 Sqn. The Rolls Royce and police escort departing behind A65-90 showed it was carrying a very important person, which was Canberra-based 34 Squadron's role. A kid in the middle of the apron with a camera was no cause for concern in the relaxed atmosphere of Australia in 1966. A month later the aircraft was retired from VIP duties and later transferred to the Navy as N2-90, eventually becoming VH-NVZ in its historic flight. It was scrapped in 2014.

A very nice DC-3 in a freshly painted Eastern Express outfit, but owned and operated by PBA. Sadly it would only fly in these colours for five months, until being put out of service in September 1988. This venerable aircraft is a real oldie, a pre-war DC-3 (delivered to Braniff in 1940) that never saw any military service. It was sold in 1991 and became N28AA.

At the Visitors Hill at MUC, a modern CRJ is framed with two great classic airliners, and opposing WWII workhorses, the Ju 52 and DC-3. Originally 41-2005, a rare C-53B, this aircraft served with several airlines in Scandinavia after the war (lastly with Nor-Fly as LN-KLV), but never with Swissair. Its last real registration was N65371. The real HB-IRN still exists in Lucerne.

The service period of the C-47 with the Koninklijke Luchtmacht or Royal (Netherlands) Air Force was relatively short, the indigenous Fokker F.27 starting to replace it in 1960. A couple of C-47s served in Dutch New Guinea until late 1962. This is actually a Danish machine, ex K-688.

VH-BPL had a long history in Australia, starting with the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II. It went to Qantas after the war and used on services in Papua New Guinea, then an Australian territory. It passed to Trans- Australia Airlines when it replaced Qantas in the territory and then to Air Niugini on independence. It entered the Australian register again in 1982, as VH-BPL. It is now with the Qantas Founders Museum, at Longreach, Queensland, restored as a static exhibit in its original Qantas markings (VH-EAP).

Delivered to Eastern in 1937, this aircraft had the highest flying time of all aircraft in the world at the moment this photo was taken, although later some old 747s surpassed it. It was withdrawn from commercial use in October 1988, by which time it accumulated an amazing total time of 91,402 hours, an absolute record for any pre-1970s aircraft. In 1993 it entered at long-term restoration project, and it is now preserved in Eastern's "The Great Silver Fleet" livery as NC18121.
