The SO.1100 Ariel (I) first flew tethered on 14 May 1947. A Mathis piston engine drove a compressor feeding air to burners at the rotor tips. In its original form it also had a pusher propeller and a stub wing with endplates, in order to fly as an autogyro in cruise. Rebuilt as seen as a pure helicopter with a tailboom it first flew on 7 March 1949. Through the SO.1110 Ariel II and SO.1120 Ariel III, development eventually led to the SO.1221 Djinn. The original 737 first flew as long ago as 9 April 1967. The design started out as a 85-seat jet but Lufthansa convinced Boeing to make it a bit bigger. This is line number 2, first flown on 13 May 1967 and delivered to the launch customer on 24 April 1968. Meanwhile Lufthansa had started scheduled services with D-ABEB and D-ABEC on 10 February 1968, and the 737-200 ordered by United was also already flying. 737 production took place at BFI until 1970. The Do 18 was designed as a transatlantic mailplane and, although 170 examples were built, it was unsuccessful as a military aircraft, underpowered by Jumo diesel engines, cramped and not all that seaworthy apparently. D-ANHR made a record flight of 8435 km (5241 miles) from the catapult ship Westfalen off the English coast to Brazil on 27-29 March 1938; it did not reach the intended destination, Rio de Janeiro. This Viking made a safe landing at Northolt on 13 April 1950 after an 'infernal machine' (bomb) exploded in the toilet. The aircraft, Vigilant, was repaired. Reconfigured to 'Admiral class' aircraft Lord Hawke at Prestwick in late 1952. The photo may have been taken at BEA's Northolt base, but confirmation is sought. To Eagle Aviation in April 1955. Withdrawn in 1961. Photo from: British European Airways

The Netherlands East Indies air force was the main military user of the small Lockheed 12 Electra Junior, acquiring 16 L-212 crew trainers and 20 L-12 transports. Eleven of the latter were delivered to the Royal Netherlands Military Flying School at Jackson, Mississippi following the Japanese invasion in the NEI. After the closure of the school, they were sent to the West Indies, Australia and England, and some served in the East Indies and Holland after the war. L2-40 ended up in the Indonesian air force and is said to survive at Kalijati (WIHK). Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
