This early Bell 47 was built as a B model in 1947. Seen in Netherlands New Guinea, apparently operating on behalf of the NNGPM company. The operator was World Wide Helicopters in 1958 when the helo had an accident, still in NNG. Later to ZK-HAJ, VH-UTU, N415DP and still airworthy in the 21st century. The MB.80 was a purpose-built small ambulance plane with good rough-field performance, accommodating one patient in a hold between the engine and the cockpit. The prototype first flew in 1932. Twenty MB.81 production machines were built. They saw action in Morocco and Syria and a few in France too during 1939-40. Photo from: Dassault

'Leer. Residents watch as an ICRC plane loaded with sorghum lands on the town's dirt airstrip.' Interestingly C-FASY was struck from the Canadian register on the very day this photo was reportedly taken, 26 May 2015. To 7Q-STA, still flying for the Red Cross. G-AHFI was Skyways' first Avro York, christened Skyway on 13 April 1946 and departing Langley airfield near London for Basra on the company's first commercial flight the next day. 30 red leather armchair seats were installed. From 31 May 1946, Skyways undertook tourist flights to Switzerland as seen here. From 16 November 1948 its Yorks took part in the Berlin Airlift. G-AHFI crashed on approach to Gatow on 15 March 1949. The three crew were killed. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

Harold the Helicopter from Thomas the Tank Engine was clearly inspired by the Whirlwinds used for BEA's short-lived airport shuttle from Waterloo Station in London. Floats were fitted because the risk of the single-engined helicopters ending up in the Thames was somewhat real. Photo from: Westland

First S.IX for the Netherlands army. The naval version of the S.IX elementary trainer was powered by a Menasco Buccaneer inline engine, the army version by an Armstrong Siddeley Genet Major radial. Licence production of the Genet by the Kromhout company in Amsterdam proved troublesome and used engines had to be purchased in Britain for the first twelve aircraft.
