The Riviera touring amphibian was designed by the Nardi factory, reworked by Fiat and ultimately produced by SIAI-Marchetti. It is thought that I-RAIA may be c/n 001, the first production aircraft going to the USA as N73902, and may have been remanufactured from c/n 4, I-EUST. N73902 sold as N622 and crashed in Louisiana in July 1964. See Steinar's Hangar website for more information. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

According to a German source, the Ju 86 was originally designed with fixed landing gear. The narrow-track retractable main gear seems to have worked adequately. Svalan, ex D-AXWZ, was the sole civil Ju 86 delivered to Sweden. It was transferred to the Swedish air force in 1940. Photo by: Asbjørn Barlaup / Nasjonalbiblioteket (Norway)

Rare Bücker type first flown in November 1937. The B model had a 60-hp Walter Mikron engine. Only some 25 Students were built, of which three were exported to Sweden. SE-AHJ, reportedly ex D-ESJE, was bought by a member of the Halmstad Flygklubb and later donated to the club. Wrecked in 1950. A surviving Student retook to the air in Germany in 2020 as D-EUTO. Interesting catch by a Norwegian photographer - a rare Tupolev PS-35 airliner, flanked by two Swedish Ju 52s at Bromma. Registration read from another shot. The Soviet Transports bible says this airframe was tested on the Stockholm route in July and August 1938. The aircraft looks sleek and powerful and indeed it had the same Cyclone engines as the DC-3, but could only seat ten passengers. Photo by: Asbjørn Barlaup / Nasjonalbiblioteket (Norway)

Italian P-26 Peashooter lookalike! The original Ba.27 was actually inspired by a Travel Air Model R racing aircraft purchased by Italy. This is the second Ba 27 prototype, completely redesigned and of metal construction. The Italian air force showed little interest and test pilot Ambrogio Colombo took the monoplane fighter to Norway for demonstrations in September 1934 (not in 1939 as indicated by the Norwegian national library). Gressholmen, a small island in the Oslo Fjord, was Norway's international airport until 1939. The sole example of the Ro V Rocco first flew in May 1927. The covert military Severa company and Lufthansa flew it off it against the Dornier Do R Superwal and it served on the Travemünde - Copenhagen - Gothenburg - Oslo route in May and June 1928. Douglas seaplanes were moved from the factory at Clover Field (KSMO) to the beach for their first flights. On the right is the Santa Monica Athletic Club building, near the Deauville Club and the Santa Monica Pier. The DF passenger flying boat was developed from the military XP3D. Only four DFs were built, the two DF-151s going to Japan and two DF-195s to the USSR. CCCP-N205 and N206 were delivered to Russia in the spring of 1937. On 9 August 1937 CCCP-N206 was officially registered to Polyarnaya Aviats as c/n '3', which is not an actual Douglas construction number. The flying boat was withdrawn from use in August 1946, with the fuselage surviving until the early 1960s. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Aircraft of HMS Leander on Christmas Island, which lies south of Java and was then administered from Singapore. Reportedly there was an airstrip near the South Point phosphate quarry but seaplanes would beach at Flying Fish Cove. Part of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, Leander and her aircraft were surveying a flying boat route for Imperial Airways. L2222 became NZ151. Photo from: Torpedo Bay Navy Museum

CV was for Romania. Also painted on the rear fuselage is number 51 - likely the CoR number. According to French publicist Michel Barrière, this aircraft used to be F-AJHZ of Air Service which took Prince Carol back to Romania in June 1930 to ascend the throne in a coup d'état, unknown to its French pilot. Certainly CV-RAC was put on display in 1932 as 'the aircraft that brought King Carol back'. Other sources give c/n 7122/12, ex F-AIZR. Photo from: Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe
