Production of the Ju 86A-1 bomber, powered by Jumo diesel engines, began in April 1936. This one was fitted with BMW 132F (P&W Hornet) radials. This was only meant to be an export option but the radials became standard on the Ju 86E, giving little improvement in performance but much enhanced reliability. On the right is the Fiat G.50 prototype, MM334. Also note the impression of the 40-seat Junkers Ju 90 cabin. Photo from: Fondazione Fiera Milano

Sold in Australia as VH-UYA. Engine reliability problems resulted in the operator cancelling the lease. The aircraft was shipped back Germany in August where it became D-AREY. The photo shows it arriving in Australia at the end of its three-week delivery flight. An engine failed just before landing resulting in it swinging off the runway. D-AGEY became bogged and a tractor and manpower was used to extract it. It took about five weeks before a replacement engine arrived from Germany by sea. Photo from: Library and Archives NT

A sharper photo of the Ju 86 civil prototype. The aircraft was at first named Dresden and renamed Brocken by Lufthansa. Photo from Swedish source but likely taken at Dessau, given the Junkers aircraft in the background and the picture's appearance in a German magazine in June 1936. M-213 crashed while attempting a forced landing on Kwanti racecourse. It was inbound to Kai Tak when it developed engine problems. The left wing and engine was ripped off and destroyed by fire. The aircraft was shipped back to Manchuria then under Japanese control. M-213, which was operated by Manchuria Aviation Company (MKKK), had Japanese roundels on its wings. Photo taken by my father Algy Spurr, probably in 1940. This aircraft was originally ordered for SAA but then converted for military use in WW2. It was operated by 12 Squadron SAAF. More details would be welcome. Unfortunately unable to read the serial number.

Opening of Sola. The German aviation industry was well represented. This Ju 86 was Swissair's HB-IXI, traded in for HB-IXE after a mishap. D-AVEF became NF-SD in the Luftwaffe and flew until March 1945. Interesting details of the Junkers flaps and of the Ju 86's retractable landing gear, said to have been an afterthought. You'll have to fill in the rumble of the diesel engines! Photo by: Asbjørn Barlaup / Nasjonalbiblioteket (Norway)

According to a German source, the Ju 86 was originally designed with fixed landing gear. The narrow-track retractable main gear seems to have worked adequately. Svalan, ex D-AXWZ, was the sole civil Ju 86 delivered to Sweden. It was transferred to the Swedish air force in 1940. Photo by: Asbjørn Barlaup / Nasjonalbiblioteket (Norway)

Designed as an airliner and bomber, the Ju 86 saw more civilian use than the He 111. Swissair bought one Ju-86B-0, HB-IXI (c/n 860008) in 1936. It was soon damaged, returned to the manufacturer and replaced by HB-IXE. This machine became HB-IXA in 1939 when its Jumo diesel engines were replaced by BMW 132 radials. It crashed in July 1939. Flown to Australia as D-AGEY, VH-UYA was popular with passengers and pilots. But continuing problems with its diesel engines meant no sales and it was returned to Germany by ship. Photo from the Dannecker Collection.

The Junkers Ju 86 was designated B3 in Sweden, and this is the sole surviving Ju 86. The type was designed as a bomber and airliner in competition with the Heinkel He 111, and first flew in 1934. In the German Luftwafffe it had largely been replaced as a bomber by the outbreak of WWII although it was developed into a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft.
