Photo described as 'Opening of Fornebu' but neutrality markings and blacked-out windows make clear the shot was taken after the outbreak of WWII. The aircraft seems to be painted orange overall. We assume ABA service to Oslo ceased with the German invasion in Norway. Date may be 22 November 1939 when SE-AFA flew the first service between Stockholm and Perth in Scotland, as an alternative to London, with a very experienced crew - Bernt Balchen and Karl Gunnar Lindner. According to a German source, the Ju 86 was originally designed with fixed landing gear. The narrow-track retractable main gear seems to have worked adequately. Svalan, ex D-AXWZ, was the sole civil Ju 86 delivered to Sweden. It was transferred to the Swedish air force in 1940. Photo by: Asbjørn Barlaup / Nasjonalbiblioteket (Norway)

The Northrop Delta was a derivative of the Gamma mailplane, its wider fuselage seating eight passengers. It was not a success as new regulations killed single-engined airliners in the USA in 1934. This example was registered in Sweden on 19 April 1934 and the next morning, it took off for a special Stockholm - Malmö - Amsterdam - Paris flight. Note the Northrop logo on the fin. Hangar C at Schiphol was used as a night shelter for visiting aircraft. Supposedly named Svealand, the ABA G24 crashed at Tubbergen, Holland on 31 August 1932. Behind the tail of the Farman F.170 Jabiru F-AIDT there appears to be an old Fokker F.III, D-716. There are four more Lufthansa aircraft: three Rohrbach Ro VIII Rolands, D-1712, D-1692 and D-1314, and a Focke-Wulf A 17, D-1388. The Czechoslovak Fokker F.VIIb/3m would appear to be OK-ABT, which was not registered until March 1932; however, the Jabiru is listed as destroyed in October 1931. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

SE-BAC was delivered to ABA in September 1937 and this early DC-3, later operated by SAS and Karair, survives in the Finnish Aviation Museum in Vantaa. F-AOTY is a Potez 621. In the background are three KLM DC-2s, PH-ALD, AKN (airborne) and AKS. There seem to be no paved runways yet which would date the photo before 1938. PH-AKS crashed in October 1938.
