'New aircraft-bomber for the navy.' The blunt tower of Ransdorp is seen in the background. Schellingwoude was a good seaplane harbour and Fokker seaplanes could easily get here from the old waterfront factory. Landplanes had to be moved to Schiphol by barge right through the Amsterdam canals until 1950. T-10 struck off charge at Surabaya, Java in 1940. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Aircraft built by Fred Thaheld for William Tremaine who intended to fly to Japan non-stop. Junkers-inspired but with braced wing. Forward visiblity over fuel tank through periscope as in Ryan NYP. Entered for Dole Air Race but crashed en route to the start in Oakland, killing pilot and navigator. Named Spirit of John Rodgers. N number, possibly 1239, not worn. Two other airframes said to have been built may have been smaller aircraft. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Dating approximate. A famous aviator, Clarence Chamberlin tried to start his own airline using several Curtiss 53 Condors. It was apparently linked to New York & New England Airways. A former NYRBA Line and Pan Am machine, NC664M was registered to Chamberlin's wife when levied upon by the sheriff of Kings County (Brooklyn) on 31 October 1938. It burnt at Takla Lake, British Columbia, on 18 June 1942 while in American Export Airlines service under contract for the US military. Plans were made in 2010 to salvage the flying boat. The Fleetster was designed for use within South America by NYRBA Line, a forgotten competitor to Pan Am in which Consolidated's Reuben Fleet held an interest. The Fleetster would fly through the night with evening mail to catch up with the diurnal NYRBA flying boat at its night stop. Pan Am's powerful backers deprived NYRBA of a US Post Office contract. NYRBA could not survive and NC657M was returned to the factory. The factory airfield was north of Buffalo. Photo from: Consolidated / Gerald Balzer collection

Originally the last Sikorsky landplane, the S-37 was designed in 1927 for René Fonck to compete for the Orteig Prize, the prize Lindbergh won with his New York - Paris flight. This second example, the S-37-2, was built as a bomber for the USAAC, in association with Consolidated. Both S-37s saw airline service later on. Registered NR942M by 1934, the S-37-2 set out from Chicago on a flight around the world, captained by one William H Alexander. This was to improve relations between the USA and the USSR. It crashed in the North Atlantic, however, on 17 October 1934. Construction number also given as 1 or 4. Photo from: Flight

The US Army bought four Fleetsters as VIP transports, one Model 17-1 as the Y1C-11 and three Model 17-2s as Y1C-22s. The fresh C-22 designation was assigned even though the older aircraft was upgraded to much the same standard as the C-11A. Photo from: US Air Force

This 1939 airframe did not come to New Zealand until 1957. Reportedly named Spirit of Tasman Bay, ZK-BUT was the last Electra flying in New Zealand until damaged here on 18 February 1959 as the right main landing gear collapsed on arrival from Nelson. The aircraft is statically preserved at the MOTAT in Auckland, painted as ZK-AFD Kuaka of Union Airways. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

The FC-2 was the series variant of the FC-1 prototype, which had been designed for Fairchild's own aerial photography business. NC5574 was originally registered to Fairchild Aerial Surveys. The FC-2 was improved to produce the Fairchild 51 in 1930 and this airframe was modified to Model 51 standard. To Mexico as X-BADV in 1948. Photo from: Wayne State University
