TF-51D Mustang Diamond Back above St George, Utah

Built as a P51-D-30-NA for the USAAF, 1945 - s/n 44-74409. SOC 1950 and to RCAF with s/n 9235. SOC 1958. To the US and a number of private owners with c/r N6319T - landed wheels up 4 July 1970. Became N4409, N555BM. To Caraccas Venezuela as YV-508-CP from 1982 to 1990. Back to US as N51RT. Markings 4313317 applied 2002. Last flight 2 September 2003. Donated to RAF Museum.

Delivered to the USAAF in 1945, number 44-73979. Transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force on 6th December 1950, first serving with 416 Sqn RCAF, based at RCAF Station Uplands, Ottawa (at this time it carried the serial 9246). Transferred to 402 Squadron in Manitoba, then 420 Squadron. On 16th May 1951 it suffered Class B damage and was struck off strength as a result, becoming instructional airframe 612. On 10th May 1955 it was displayed at the College Royal Militaire, then transferred to RCAF Station St Jean in 1960. Transferred to IWM in 1968. Moved to Duxford 2014 - displayed as 411631.

Delivered to the USAF in 1944 as 44-74446 and then to RCAF (s/n 9223) in November 1950. Back to the US with a number of owners, it has crashed three times, 1987, 1994 and 2014 - the last one being fatal to the two pilots at the Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) Durango, CO. This P-51 was built in Dallas but too late to see action in WWII. It was purchased by the RNZAF and flown as NZ2406 until Nov. 1955 when it was offered for sale by the New Zealand govt. The fuselage survived for many years in storage with the RNZAF Museum until bought privately and transported, initially to the UK and then on to the US for restoration. This was completed in 2009, the plane was registered N5551D and painted as 44-13737 flown by Lt. Charles Buck during WWII. The plane is now part of the Classic Trainers stable and was photographed at the Classic Trainers Hangar 3 Open Day.

NA-99 Mustang tactical reconnaissance fighter, US serial 41-37376, of No 268 Sqn, RAF. The American photographer identified it as an F-6. He was attached to the USAAF's 7th Photographic Group at RAF Mount Farm and photo said to have been take there. One of Australia original warbirds, VH-AUB was first registered in 1958. It was off the register from 1966 to 1980, returning when stifling restrictions on the operation of such aircraft were lifted.

Ex RAF Museum aircraft that arrived in Australia this month and was assembled over the Easter weekend. Anzac Day, April 25, chosen to unveil the aircraft to the public at its new home.

On display in the World War II Gallery at NMUSAF. This was the last Mustang assigned to a USAF tactical unit. It was obtained from the West Virginia ANG in 1957 when the Mustang was phased out. It is painted as 44-11234 "Shimmy IV" flown by Lt Col Chester L. Sluder, CO of the 325th FG, who led the first shuttle-bombing mission from Italy to USSR on 2 Jun 44. This MTO Group used the black & yellow checkertail designed by Lt Col Robert L. Baseler on its aircraft for easy identification by bomber crews.

Former USAAF/USAF P-51D 44-74694. Registered as N7720C in 1958 then N16S in 1966. Converted to a Cavalier 2000 in 1967. Reregistered as N6851D in 1967 then I-BILL in 1969. Destroyed in a fatal crash at Mainz-Finthen, West Germany a few days after this photo was taken.
