It crashed as such on 3 June 1971 at Southend airport, England, while carrying 32 Ajax football supporters on their way back to Amsterdam. The story on how the Zambia Air Force received the Dakotas and Pembrokes dates back to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland and its break up in late 1963 when Nyasaland became Malawi, Northern Rhodesia became Zambia, and Southern Rhodesia became Rhodesia. In Italy it had been fitted with an air stair, which appears to have been the rectangular forward half of the standard double C-47 door hinged at the bottom. It was markedly larger than the rounded airstair doors Butler had in its other former C-47s.
