Acquired by American Airlines from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation on 7 December 1945 and modified as a flying test bed for airborne radar research. The print has a Kaiser-Fleetwings rubber stamp dated 'SEP 20 1946' on the back. That plus the inclusion of the company's Chief Engineer (R.W. Ayer) in the photo suggests their involvement in providing the strange-looking cupola. On 8 August 1947 the aircraft was wrecked when it stalled into the East River during a single engine missed approach at LaGuardia/NY.

On D-Day 6th June 1944 whilst serving with the 86th Troop Carrier Squadron, 437th Troop Carrier Group USAAF, this aircraft towed a glider from RAF Ramsbury carrying men and equipment to a landing zone near Sainte-Mère-Église, Normandy. It was retired to the MASDC "boneyard" at Tucson in April 1964, and bought by Embry Riddle University in Miami, FL., as N72420. In 1973 it was acquired by the Lee County Mosquito Control District as a spares source to support the operation of their DC-3 fleet, and lapsed into dereliction at their Buckingham Field base.

Donated to the museum. This aircraft had flown with Qantas from 1948 to 1960, initially as VH-EAP and later as VH-EBY. Sold to TAA as VH-SBG and later P2-SBG and P2-ANP with Air Niugini. Became N5590A in 1980 before returning to Australian ownership in 1982 as VH-BPL. Made its last flight in January 1993 to Hoxton Park near Sydney. Struck off strength January 31, 1946, it flew in the USA until coming to Canada in 1973 to fly a short time with Nordair. Registered to Ilford Riverton Airways / Air Manitoba 1977 - 1993, the aircraft returned to the USA. Displayed at several museums as N293MW / 43-30709, it was put up for sale in 2011. Ferried to Villavicencio, Colombia in 2014 for Aerolineas Llaneras Ltda (ARALL) as HK-4971, it remains there at last report.
