'Aviator Clarence Chamberlin's plane'. Built as an L-8A Sirius in 1930. Sold to 'Dutch' Shankle and also flown by his wife, air racer Joan Fay. Converted to L-8D Altair in 1932. Sold to Louise Ashby, Chamberlin's wife, in May 1936. The Chamberlins intended to make a stratospheric transatlantic honeymoon flight for which the razorback canopy was added after August 1936. It did not happen and the aircraft was sold to the US Army Engineers Office through broker Charles Babb in 1940. The Curtiss 53 Condor in the background was also owned by Chamberlin or his wife. The Grumman Goose prototype, first flown on 29 May 1937. Delivered to private owners as NX16910 on 3 July and used for commuting to New York. The full type certificate was issued on 29 September and aircraft then became NC16910. Later rebuilt to G-21A. Sold to Aerovías Nacionales de Puerto Rico in 1940. Eventually used by US Corps of Engineers in Canada and reportedly buried at some remote site. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Reputed to have been the first Allied aircraft to land in southern France during the Operation Dragoon invasion after being forced down due to a technical problem. The pilot was Stanley F. Fierstein. This photo may be that event because the airstrip is very rough and sandy. 111 TFS was based at Frejus following the invasion but it was an established airfield. Some sources say this photo was taken in Sicily but the National Archives says it is the south of France. Val Gal II was scrapped in 1946. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland
