A famous wartime incident when two Ansons of 2 SFTS became locked together while on a navigation exercise. The crew of the bottom aircraft, L9162, bailed out as did the navigator in N4876. However its pilot, Fuller, found he could control both aircraft with ailerons and flaps. But not the engines of L9162, which remarkably continued to run. Fuller flew on for a further 8km before belly landing in a paddock. N4876 was repaired and remained in service until 1947, Fuller was killed in road accident in 1944. VH-ANV was a C-47A converted to civil standards with Wright R-1820 engines and a passenger door by ANA in 1946. In 1953 the double doors were reinstalled and it operated as a freighter with ANA and Ansett-ANA until withdrawn from use in 1968. Sold in Cambodia in 1971 as XU-EAH. Demonstrator for Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Was written off when a brake cable failed at Wau, PNG, on October 23, 1947. G-AIMC rolled backwards down the steep airfield carrying the crew of three and nine passengers with it. Wrecked but no injuries to those on board. The crew were unaware that standard practice was to park sideways to the 1 in 12 slope. Note Qantas Liberator in background. Photo from: State Library of New South Wales

The catalogue caption to this photo says the aircraft belongs to Victorian and Interstate Airways. However it did not acquire VH-UJV until 1940 and besides had "VIA" painted on the fin. In 1938, when the photo was supposed to have been taken, UJV was based at Deniliquin, not far from Eurolie Station. The logo cannot be deciphered but it had previously been operated by the Life Science School of Applied Psychology, which likely explains the aircraft name. UJV was impressed by the RAAF in July 1940. Photo from: State Library of New South Wales
