Named for the Dutch city of Venlo, like KLM's first Constellation, PH-TAV. PH-TFF arrived in 1949. On 23 March 1952 this aircraft burnt at Bangkok - Don Muang after the number 3 engine caught fire and a propeller blade slashed into the fuselage in flight. '305 No 1' - this is the first Farman F.305, F-ALEF, with nine-cylinder Gnome-Rhône engines, and not F-ALEE, which was an F.306. F-ALEF had an accident in Prague in December 1934, apparently still as an F.305, and became an F.303, No 6. 'B-LATB Fasan seized in Reval [Tallinn]'. We don't know why the constables took action. This F13 was operated by the Latvian airline Latvijas Gaisa Satiksmes, or Lettländische Luftverkehrs AG in German, on the Tallinn - Riga - Königsberg route. B-LATB crashed in October 1924 and was replaced by another B-LATB (c/n 570). This is assumed to be the first one because of the irregular application of the registration, with dots. Forced landed on remote Sable Island after the crew realised returning to their base at Dartmouth was no longer possible. Reports say the aircraft landed in a freshwater lagoon and a lighthouse keeper altered authorities. The crew were flown back to base in a Catalina but the aircraft was abandoned. 'The captain C.G. von Rosen waves his wife goodbye, though the chocks are still in place.' Adventurous Swedish Count Carl Gustaf von Rosen was hired by KLM after flying in Ethiopia. He married stewardess Hanny Krijgsman in 1938. He took a leave of absence to fly a bomber DC-2 for Finland during the Winter War, and was back in Holland just in time to evacuate a KLM DC-3 to Britain in May 1940. Apparently the RAF did not accept him because he had just visited his uncle - Hermann Göring! He worked for ABA Aerotransport until 1945 and then went back to Africa. Hanny joined the Dutch resistance and survived Dachau concentration camp. She died in 1949. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives
