Starting out as 42-24081 and becoming an R4D-5 in 1943, c/n 9962 was modified to R4D-8 Super Dakota standard for the USN in 1952 (so gaining the new c/n) but was soon handed over to the USMC, although a period was spent back in the USN (Norfolk) around 1970. Lastly based at Beaufort MCAS, SC, she entered storage at DM four months before this shot and in 2.81 was registered N8502X, but ended up with Desert Airparts in 9.82

US Marine Corps C-117D Super Dakota ex MCAS El Toro, California. In storage at Davis Monthan AFB from January 1970 until sale in September 1982. No subsequent history.

TMF Aircraft C-117D had been parked at LaBelle, FL for about two years without engines. It was totally destroyed when Hurricane Irma visited LaBelle on September 10, 2017.

US Navy R4D-8 of Fasron 200 communications squadron based at RAF Hendon on finals to RAF Burtonwood, Lancashire in 1956. It had been converted to 'Super Dakota' standard from R4D-5 c/n 12340.

C-117D of Naval Air Facility Mildenhall at its home base. The USN C-117D's were unique in having had three c/ns - this one was originally R4D-6 15431/26876 but was given 43322 on rebuild to C-117D in 1951. 50821 is now preserved at Pensacola. Sister ship 17171 is in the background.

Rebuilt in 1952 from R4D-5 BuAer39080, this C-117D served the US Marine Corps until retirement in 1977. Operated by Kenn Borek from their Calgary base from 1994 to 2005.

Bare metal C-117D (ex US Navy BuNo 39070) photographed shortly before going to the Colombian Air Force as FAC1632. While there, it remained current on the US Aircraft Register as N34AH, and in fact returned to the US as such in 2005. It was then parked at Benson, AZ and was still there by 2024. Unfortunately, it appears the aircraft did not make a single flight during the nearly two decades of storage there.

The well-known NAF Mildenhall Super Dak at the annual Open House. On 21.11.73 the aircraft encountered severe icing over Iceland during a local supply flight, making it impossible to maintain height, so the crew elected to make a forced landing on a frozen river. The ice broke but 171 stayed afloat. After recovery the remains were abandoned and are still there topped by ice and snow
