The Puerto Rico ANG (or PRANG) was the last operational user of the Starfighter in the USAF (1968-75); never common in American use, the only others by this time were the natural finish aircraft of the Luftwaffe training unit at Luke AFB, AZ. Nice to see another Lockheed classic sharing the ramp. Langley AFB was the first airbase in the US, opened 1916

Just over a month before this shot was taken from a Cessna 172, the famous Starlifter 'Hanoi Taxi' arrived at the US Air Force Museum in Dayton to mark the end of an era as the last eight of the type were finally withdrawn. Here surrounded by KC-135s and F-111s, they were being broken up at quite a rate

The Skyraider belatedly entered US Air Force service in 1964 for the war in Vietnam. This A-1E is painted as an aircraft of the 1st Special Operations Squadron, although in reality this airframe did not leave the US Navy.

The Control Configured Vehicle test NB-52E was fitted with three canard control surfaces (two horizontal and one ventral) which were linked to computers receiving flight data from sensors mounted throughout the aircraft monitoring turbulence, which fed back compensatory control inputs. Although here on 'Celebrity Row' next to the prototype for the Boeing 707, she was scrapped in 10.93

This Dagger saw a fair amount of European service, having been based at Bitburg, Ramstein and Soesterberg prior to 1964. With a total of nine different operating squadrons to its credit, last flew in 1976 with the Hawaii ANG 199th FIS and now preserved at the Travis museum in the markings of the 82nd FIS (one of the units it served, at Travis, before USAFE), having been carried there aboard a C-5

This is the unique FICON (FIghter CONveyor) modification of the prototype Thunderflash, designed to operate as a parasite fighter from a mother-ship B-36 (in fact GRB-36F) using a trapeze mechanism. Whilst technically successful, the operation was very challenging even for experienced pilots with several near disasters while unhooking or recovering. After a number of RF-84Ks were trialled by SAC in 1955-56, the project was dropped. The aircraft is now displayed indoors in the 91st SRS markings carried in the mid-1950s

Huskies were a familiar sight at US bases during the Vietnam era, standing by for fire and rescue duties. These days of course I'd wait for the passers-by behind, but adds a touch of period fashion here! Although this "Pedro" is no longer extant, 62-4535 which also served 40 ARRS is the care of the Midland Air Museum
