First flown in August 1953 as an MR.2 and operated by 204, 269, 210, 38 and 205 Sqdns, going back into service with 8 Sqdn following AEW.2 conversion in 1972. Wfu in 1981 and used for crash rescue training at St Mawgan. Refurbished for display in MR.2 configuration as gate guard there in 1989 (my 2011 photo). In 2015 the MoD put the aircraft up for disposal and amid fears of scrapping, a private group crowdfunded its purchase as a charity, dismantled the aircraft and stored it near the site of the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre (which has since sadly met its demise) at Newquay

XM575 was delivered to the RAF in May 1963, entering service with 617 Sqdn and going on to serve with the Scampton and Waddington Wings, 101, 50, and 44 Sqdns. The aircraft took part in the Falklands victory flypast over London in October 1982 and was retired the next year, flying into East Midlands Airport for preservation at the Aeropark. It is seen here in the airport maintenance area soon after arrival, before being moved off to the museum's site

XM605 entered service with the RAF at the end of 1963 with 9 Sqdn, going on to serve with the Coningsby, Cottesmore and Waddington Wings before progressing to 101 Sqdn in 1973 and then finally 50 Sqdn in 1979. Vulcans regularly visited the USA as part of the NATO nuclear deterrent on lone ranger missions, bombing competitions and squadron deployments. XM605 was one such and when selected for preservation upon retirement was flown to Castle AFB in September 1981 for the Castle Air Museum. The following year the RAF borrowed its refuelling probe for use in the Falklands campaign

Delivered to the RAF in January 1963 and serving 27 Sqdn, the Cottesmore and Waddington Wing/44 Sqdn, this Vulcan was ferried to Cardiff for the Wales Aircraft Museum in January 1983. The climate was not kind to the airframe and when the museum closed in 1996 it was scrapped, although the nose was saved and is now at Staverton. The aircraft is seen here having encountered some kind of emergency.

XL444 first flew from Woodford in October 1961, being delivered in the all-white scheme to 27 Sqdn the following month but was apparently prone to technical issues, so spent a fair bit of time on maintenance. It was back at Woodford inh September 1964 for a refit before going to the Scampton Wing in June 1965. It served with 617 Sqn as part of the Scampton Wing before receiving the squadron's 'Dambusters' emblem in 1971 as seen here. Other units served were 35 Sqdn, 230 OCU and Waddington Wing. It was sold for scrap at the end of 1982

XL391 did not enter squadron service till 1968, as from 1963 it was retained for trails at Boscombe Down with the new Olympus 301 engines. After use by the BCDU (Bomber Command Development Unit), it saw service with the Cottesmore Wing, 9, 101 and 44 Sqdns. Struck off in February 1983, it was flown to Blackpool for preservation that month but funds were insufficient to look after it suitably so it rotted until sold for scrap in 2006
