The sole FD.1 low speed test Delta winged aircraft has just been assembled in Fairey's experimental hangar at Manchester's Ringway Airport. It was tested down the rather short main 4200 ft Runway 06-24, but made its first flight at A&AEE Boscombe Down. Image obtained from Faireys.

The first Victor production aircraft flew on 1.2.56 - at this time, the only UK-based aircraft with sufficient performance to intercept it at height were the F-101 Voodoos of the USAF's 81st TFW. This early example was delivered to the RAF on 29.11.57 and is seen here hoping for preservation in its original white colours (but note camo outboard wing panels). It was, however, sold as scrap just seven months later

Here with 79 Shadow Sqdn/229 OCU (1 TWU), this 1956-build Hunter was rebuilt to FGA.9 (F6A) standard by HSA and exported to Kenya in 6.74 as an FGA.80 where it joined the Air Force with serial 803. After sale to the Zimbabwe AF as 8100, it was one of eight Hunters caught in a terrorist attack at Thornhill AB on 25.7.82

The only surviving example of 1064 Defiants built, flying with 307 (Polish) Sqn in WWII coded 'EW-D' (now appears on the aircraft at Hendon) and later with 153 and 285 Sqn. The Merlin-powered Defiant was initially successful but once German pilots became aware of the rear and upward firepower, it was severely hampered by the extra weight of the turret. Put aside for preservation as long ago as 1944, first displayed at St Athan in 1960 and moved to the RAF Museum in 1971, back in night-fighter black finish

A sight that the later custodians of this Shack, Air Atlantique Classic Flight, probably dreamt of seeing at Coventry. But it wasn't to be, and in 2024 it was dismantled, then transported to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington in early 2025
