Experimental tiltwing aircraft converted from a Chase YC-122C, 49-2883. Strangely named Propelloplane by Hiller. Two Allison T40 turboprops from the XFV and XFY Pogo programmes but the X-18 also needed a J34 turbojet in the fuselage for jet reaction pitch control. First flown at Moffett Field on 24 November 1959, then moved to Edwards were photo is assumed to have been taken. A malfunction caused the aircraft to enter a spin on 20th flight in July 1962 but test pilot George Bright managed to land. Not flown again but damaged when its ground test platform collapsed and subsequently scrapped.

Flew with 32nd TFS for only 4 months, transferred to 36th TFW on 15 Oct 1980.

The Boys from Syracuse of the New York Air National Guard in Toronto for the Canadian National Exhibition. The aircraft was later with the 354th Fighter Squadron based at Davis-Monthan in Arizona. Tragically it crashed on a night training mission May 27, 1997 in the nearby Barry M. Goldwater training range.

Stored at Davis-Monthan AFB with park code FP418 in 1982. To Charleston AFB in 1988. To the Florida Military Aviation Museum at Clearwater by 1994 then to the MAPS Museum at Akron, OH in 2004 and marked as 70276.

Part of the EAA Museum collection, and on display near the EAA Convention grounds. On loan from the USAF Museum since1979.
