VALT stood for VTOL Approach and Landing Technology. This 1967 CH-47B, 66-19138, was assigned to NASA Langley and NASA Ames from 1 July 1974 until 1989 as NASA 543, NASA 544, N544NA and NASA 737. It was then rebuilt as a CH-47D, 89-00176, and was still in US Army service as of 2024 as as CH-47F, 13-8134. Photo from: NASA Langley

The unmissable bulk of the Super Guppy. Most of the airframe for the conversion by Aero Spacelines in 1965 came from a former Pan American Airways Boeing Stratocruiser, N1038V. However, the wings, engines, and forward fuselage came from one of the Air Force's experimental turbo-prop powered YC-97J aircraft, 52-2693. It continued in use by NASA until 1991 when it was replaced by a younger Super Guppy (N951NA ex F-GEAI)

Delivered to the Air Force in 1963 as a regular Stratotanker, 63-7998, this aircraft served in the aerial refuelling role for thirty years before passing to NASA for use in its Reduced Gravity Research Program. After nearly 35,000 parabolas for 18,000 passengers had been flown from the Johnson Space Center, it made what was reckoned to be the last ever flight by a turbojet KC-135A in October 2004 when it was delivered to Davis Monthan for Pima.
