Upon arriving at the NAF on a Saturday in mid-January, I was surprised to see the most aircraft I had ever seen on the airfield. VFA-127 happened to be one of the visiting units and they brought several of these nicely camouflaged Hornets.
Strike Fighter Squadron EIGHTY SIX [VFA-86] 'Sidewinders' based at MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, are operating this Hornet in a very weird colour scheme. The 'Sidewinders' made news while deployed in the Indian Ocean in 1979. It was during that time that VFA-86 spent 144 continuous days at sea following the seizure of the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran.
CVW-1's CAG bird arriving at Villafranca for an over night stop. The aircraft was painted with Carrier Air Wing 1 titles on the fuselage and it's large badge on the tail, but was operated by VFA-86. A small 'Sidewinder' snake emblem can be found on the external fuel tank.
