Registration missing in the reconstructed French register but the rear fuselage provides the aircraft version - Type 81 - and the construction number which seems to read 9828. Photo from municipal library of the city of Le Havre and no doubt it was taken on a nearby beach. Photo from: Bibliothèque nationale de France - Gallica

Delivered to the Central Flying School at Point Cook in 1918. Sold to a civilian buyer in 1919 but retained its full military markings until it entered the register as G-AUBW in June 1921. It was destroyed in a hangar fire in 1931 by which time it was registered VH-UBW. At the time of the photo C9374 was travelling with an Avro 504 giving rural Australians with their first experiences of flight such as those in the tiny community of Farrell Flat. Handley Page's prototype of their first passenger airliner, developed from the O/400 bomber. It was written off on 10 July 1923 during a forced landing at Poix in France following engine problems during a flight from Croydon to Le Bourget, when it over-ran the runway and broke it's back. No injuries were sustained by the seven passengers, and the two crew members received "minor injuries". Photographer not known, possibly an Imperial Airways publicity shot?
