This Super Catalina does not carry a registration, and was identified by its data plate. It showed the aircraft to be serial number 21232, which is actually its former US Navy serial. The c/n for this aircraft is still subject of debate among experts, but it is almost certainly CV-548 (Canadian-Vickers built). Parked behind is sistership N9825Z.
After a smooth if rather late touchdown this Catalina veered starboard and smashed its port wingtip and float off on a steel harbour buoy. It spun round ,started shipping water and had to be towed to a slipway where it sank. Rebuilt at the old RAF Mount Batten seaplane base in the sound it was flown out some months later. Owner Bob Franks and passengers weren't seriously hurt.
