The 1934 Challenge International de Tourisme was organised in Warsaw but here the Polish and German participants are seen in Berlin, one of the first waypoints in a 9537.4 km rally: roughly Warsaw - Brussels - Casablanca - Tunis - Rome - Vienna - Prague - Warsaw. The Polish machines are RWD-9s and PZL P-26s. The RWD-9 did very well: Jerzy Bajan in SP-DRD won the general classification of the Challenge, Stanisław Płonczyński in SP-DRC, top left, came second and Jan Buczyński in SP-DRE took fifth place overall. In the background are the German Fieseler Fi 97s, Klemm Kl 32s and Messerschmitt Bf 108s. All five types were designed specifically for this event.

This Fokker 50 was originally delivered to DLT in December 1991 and then on to Lufthansa CityLine in March 1992 and is pictured here on very short final for rw26L. The plane would go to Contact Air (Team Lufthansa) in June 1996 and then to Aria Air in February 2004 as EP-EAH before joining the National Iranian Oil Company in May 2013 as EP-NFD where it is still current.

Whilst in Berlin, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have a look around at Tempelhof. Since its closure in 2008, it has now been turned into a park which everyone can access. Whether you want to have a walk around, ride your bike, walk your dog or just sit down on a runway and have a drink (like I did), it's all possible. Even though you know it's closed down now, I couldn't help getting those old "DC-4 at Tempelhof" images in my head that I had seen on the web. A very unique place for sure!

A Soviet Douglas DC-3 in Berlin, opening a new service from Moscow after Hitler and Stalin smashed Poland. Some 21 original DC-3s were imported by the USSR. This airframe was lost during a 'special mission' in August 1941 and the URSS-B mark was re-used by c/n 2035 according to the Soviet Transports bible. The 'URSS' register was for aircraft flying abroad. It is not clear why it was installed as the regular CCCP prefix should have been fine for international going - it really is CCCP, not 'SSSR' written in Cyrillic. Deutschlandflug (German air rally), late August 1933. 126 aircraft competed, of which almost two-thirds were Klemm L 25s, L 26s and L 32s. In the background are Junkers of Lufthansa. All the planes already wear the black, white and red flag on the right and the swastika flag on the left side as decreed by the new Nazi regime on 6 July. The odd one out is the Heinkel HD 22 bottom right, which was bought by the US Army for the military attaché in Berlin with serial 30-420! Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The prototype of the Junkers G31, clearly at Tempelhof. The G24 in the background is D-946 which dates the photo before September 1928. It looks like the G31 has three BMW VI engines at this point. This airframe eventually went to New Guinea as a G31go freighter, VH-URQ, fitted with P&W Hornet engines and strengthened with a second horizontal tailplane. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

The prototype of the Rohrbach Ro VIII Roland airliner, presumably photographed soon after its first flight at Tempelhof. The airframe was delivered to Lufthansa with the name Zugspitze, but soon moved on to Spain to become M-CAAC, the very first aircraft of Iberia. Returned to Germany in August 1928 and rebuilt as Ro VIIIMb bomber. Photo from: SLUB/ Deutsche Fotothek
