No aerobridges, no pushback, just taxi in and taxi out. Sydney was Australia's busiest airline hub in 1966 but the activity paled by US and European standards. The positive for a boy with a basic camera was no security and you could walk onto the apron to take a photo.
Photo taken from the control tower that stood in the middle of Sydney airport from 1954 to 1972. The building remained in use for many years after the controllers moved out. It was demolished amid expansion of the taxiway network to serve runway 16L/34R, which opened in 1994.
Under the strict Australian two-airline policy in force at the time, VH-RME and TAA's VH-TJA arrived in Australia on the same day (October 16, 1964) and entered service on the same day (November 2) on the same route - Melbourne (Essendon) to Sydney. -RME was withdrawn from use and sold in Mexico as XA-MEG in 1978.
