The second Hawker P.1052 (VX279) rebuild into the P.1081 to meet an Australian specification to replace the RAAFs P-51s and Vampires and therefore also known as the "Australian Fighter". The engine was replace by an early Rolls-Royce Tay engine. First flown on 19 June 1950. Because of outbreak of the hostilities at the Korean peninsula the Australians ordered the Meteor F.Mk.8 which was instantly available. Further development of the P.1081 was cancelled in November 1950 and the P.1081 was handed over to the RAE. Hawker Siddenly Aviation photo neg. nr. H250

The story of these two Vampire trainers in Syrian markings, 493 (c/n 15768) and 494, is unclear to us. Apparently the real customer was Egypt but the Suez Crisis prevented delivery and a DH.115 production list says 'scrapped'. However, another photo shows 493 at Luqa, Malta in 'early 1960', still in Syrian markings. Is this Hatfield or Hawarden? Photo from: Hawker Siddeley

Dutchman Frits Koolhoven led production of the Royal Aircraft Factory BE.2 at Armstrong Whitworth and designed the FK.3 as an improved aircraft that would be easier to build. 500 production FK.3s were built by AW and by Hewlett & Blondeau at Luton. They mostly served as training aircraft although the type was used operationally by No 47 Sqn which was based in Thessaloniki to fight on the Macedonian Front.

Third Courier production aircraft, an AS.5B, fitted with a more powerful Cheetah engine. Co-located with Airspeed at Portsmouth Airport, the RK Dundas company bought sales rights for India and G-ACLF departed to India for a demo tour in December 1933. Attempts to sell the aircraft to Spain during the Spanish Civil War blocked. To North Eastern Airways, Croydon in February 1937. To Portsmouth, Southsea & Isle of Wight Aviation in 1939 and converted to AS.5A, with fixed gear. Impressed as X9342 in 1940 and allocated to Air Transport Auxiliary. Struck off charge in 1944.

The only flying example of the Merganser five-passenger transport. The reason given for its failure is that the Gipsy Queen 51 engine was not put in production. Further development led to the Percival Prince and Pembroke. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
