This camouflaged C-39 (we called it warpaint then) was taken in September 1941. This was close to the end of the red center national insignia use. The aircraft was from the Sacramento Air Depot and was plane number 20 of the 62nd Transport Group which had been activated in December 1940. The serial of the aircraft is not known. For that you would need to walk up close and inspect the data block below the cockpit. A C-39 has a DC-2 fuselage and wings, and a DC-3 tail unit, centre-section and landing gear. Thirty-five C-39s were built.

This aircraft was one of 28 C-130's stored at Sussex County Airport (GED) in Georgetown, Delaware. Seven were former Royal Australian Air Force and 21 former Royal Air Force. I believe they were all taken in trade by Lockheed for C-130J aircraft. Most, if not all, of the RAF aircraft were scrapped at the airport and I believe most, if not all, of the RAAF were sold and departed the field. The aircraft were parked on a disused runway that had a track installed for ejection seat testing in the 1950s and later used to store retired United Airlines Viscounts.

Catron & Fisk already did passenger flights between Bakersfield and Los Angeles with a smaller, trimotor triplane in 1922. The CF-10 first flew on 20 May 1925 according to The Ace magazine which published a photo in June. In that shot the aircraft has protruding ailerons on the lower wings that are no longer present here. Another photo, taken at Burdett Airport, LA, shows a CF-10 marked 'CF-43' in a circle on the fuselage and this may well be the same aircraft. It is worth noting that the US civil aviation register was almost non-existant before 1927. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Aircraft built by Fred Thaheld for William Tremaine who intended to fly to Japan non-stop. Junkers-inspired but with braced wing. Forward visiblity over fuel tank through periscope as in Ryan NYP. Entered for Dole Air Race but crashed en route to the start in Oakland, killing pilot and navigator. Named Spirit of John Rodgers. N number, possibly 1239, not worn. Two other airframes said to have been built may have been smaller aircraft. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Designed in 1935 and designed for guarding large areas. It ended up being used as a bomber however. When WWII broke out, only 16 Fokker T.V's had been delivered. 9 were enlisted with the bomber wing (850, 853, 854, 855, 856, 858, 859, 862 en 865), 1 was almost complete (852), 1 without engines (857), 1 waiting for armament (863), 1 as spare parts bird (851) and 1 near the KLM building (860). These were all based at Amsterdam/Schiphol. 861 was based at Texel for crew training. Unfortunately I wasn't able to identify the aircraft in the photo. Photo from Harm Reinders

The French carrier Béarn launching a Levasseur PL.101 reconnaissance aircraft. The construction and serial number on the rudder is 34 or 54; we think either is possible for a PL.101. The PL.101 replaced the original PL.10 model in 1935. Photo from: National Museum of Denmark
