The US Army bought two Vegas, both DL-1 aircraft with metal fuselages, built in Detroit. 31-405 was assigned to NACA at Langley and scrapped in 1935. The other one was 31-408, a DL-1B Special, designated Y1C-17. The fastest aircraft in the Army, it was used for an attempt at America's west to east transcontinental speed record, but crashed in Kentucky. Also, one L-5C Vega was impressed during WWII as 42-94148. Photo from: US Air Force

Mystery ship! N7560V is not listed by the FAA or anyone else. There are numerous photos from this shoot, so the reg has not been retouched. The assumption is that this plane was testing modifications incorporated in the 737-200/Adv. Photo is thus assumed taken between 1968 and 1971. Photo from: SFO Museum

Only two KAT-1 trainers were apparently built and both are framed here with Fuji KM JA3122 in the foreground, presumably at Miyazaki. The KAT-1 was designed as a military trainer, but the Fuji-built Beech T-34 was preferred. The first prototype JA3084, in the background, was tested by the Japanese army. Both KAT-1s deleted from the register as 'obsolete' in 1962 and both listed as having gone to the Kakamigahara museum in Gifu. The KAL-2 was a cabin variant of the KAT-1, not to be confused with the KAL-1, an earlier taildragger type. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

From the Beech T-34 Mentor, Fuji developed the four-seat LM-1 and LM-2 Nikko four-seat liaison aircraft, the KM civilian four-seater and the KM-2 military trainer with two seats side by side. The KM was used by the Civil Aviation College but we gather there were only two four-seat KMs: one XKM and one KM-1. JA3122 registered to the school on 3 March 1959. Two MB.90s were to take part in the Challenge International de Tourisme in August 1932, but did not show up although the first one, first flown in June, wears the event's tail stripes and number L2 underwing here. F-AMBO was displayed at the November 1932 Paris Salon, with a Renault 4Pei engine replacing its provisional DH Gipsy. In 1933 this aircraft was converted to MB.93 standard, but the MB.90 family was unsuccessful. Photo from: Dassault

PSA phased out the Electra in 1969 but the type made a comeback in their very seventies colours in 1975 to serve Lake Tahoe, which did not allow full-jet airliners. Among the four airframes acquired was N171PS, which had been PSA's first Electra in 1959. By mid-1978 this aircraft was in the revised orange-red colour scheme as PSA had found that the pink did not weather well. The L-188 was finally retired in 1979. Photo from: SFO Museum

Photo dated 1955 by the source but this Viscount was built for MEA in 1957, and the titles indicate that the photo is from the 1960s. When this airframe returned from a lease to Jordan Airways in January 1964, MEA had taken over Air Liban and aircraft wore dual titles for a while. The Air Liban name was dropped in 1965. This was the sole aircraft of Dominican Wings. The airline only operated from 2015 until 2017 but it reformed as Arajet with a 737-8 MAX fleet in 2022. The photo was taken at Punta Cana where LAN / LATAM is a regular guest. Photo from: Dominican Wings

Another picture of the first DC-2, this time in Kansas City with the Intercity Viaduct in the background. TWA abandoned its slogan 'The Lindbergh Line' in late 1938, and replaced it with 'The Transcontinental Line' titles. The two red tail stripes were introduced earlier. It looks like Stratoliner NC19907 was photographed after it was returned to TWA by the USAAF. The fleet of five aircraft was refurbished for $2 million by Boeing according to Wikipedia. They served with TWA until 1951. Photo from: Jackson County Historical Society

Date 'circa 1938': two DC-2s and two DC-3B Sky Sleepers, with NC17313 on the right, at TWA's Kansas headquarters. Another photos confirms registration NC17317 for fleet number 355. It was delivered in June 1937. The photo was probably taken not long thereafter. NC17317 was impressed as a C-49F, 42-56621. She collided with an impressed DST, ex NC18104 of United, over Camp Williams, Wisconsin on 24 June 1942. The DST survived. Photo from: SFO Museum

TWA had its headquarters in Kansas City. This is Hangar 1 at KMKC, now home to the TWA Museum. Maintenance moved to the B-25 plant in Fairfax, across the Missouri River, after WWII, but a flood destroyed that and the Kansas City Overhaul Base was built adjacent to what became Kansas City International Airport (KMCI). Here we see two DC-3B Sky Sleepers, the second being NC17317. They were delivered in mid-1937 and do not yet wear the slogan 'The Lindbergh Line' which disappeared again from late 1938.
