B-24s were used to haul fuel to Kunming in September 1944. On this date, 6 September 1944, twenty-four B-24s flew in about 34,000 US gallons according to the Pacific Wrecks website. That means a cargo of about 8300 lb per aircraft, which is consistent with the maximum bombload of a fully equipped B-24J. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

Originally a UH-1F, this Huey was converted to UH-1P gunship for the USAF's 20th Special Operations Squadron 'Green Hornets' in Vietnam. Sister ship 65-7925, which is in a museum, underwent the conversion to UH-1P in June 1969 and was shipped back to the US in November 1970. Before and after their dangerous tour of duty, these helicopters had more sedate jobs at various USAF bases. No longer toting guns and rocket pods, 65-7927 is seen over Japan where it was assigned to the 475th Air Base Wing. Photo by: Curtis Eddings / National Archives at College Park, Maryland

'JASDF personnel from Naha, Japan, disembark from a JASDF CH-47 helicopter at Kadena.' Thus the squadron within the Rescue Wing is probably Naha Kyunantai. For some reason this young Chinook was withdrawn from use and scrapped in 2002. It was delivered in 1989. In the peculiar JASDF serial system, the first digit is the last digit of the year of delivery, the second digit is for the aircraft type (the F-4 Phantom also has 7) and the third digit is for a role/aircraft class, in this case 4 for helicopters. The first of only six S-58 helicopters - HUS-1Gs 1332 through 1336 and 1343 - to serve in the US Coast Guard, which received the HH-52 Seaguard instead. VT-28 at Corpus Christi, Texas flew the Tracker as a multi-engine trainer from 1960 until 1979 when the TS-2A was replaced by the T-44 Pegasus (King Air). Another photo shows that D-409 is BuNo 136446, D-440 is BuNo133328 and D-413 is BuNo 136497. Seen at Alameda, these aircraft have probably already finished their career with VT-28 here. 133328 is on record as going to the MASDC boneyard earlier that month, but was returned to service. Joe Baugher's US serials website doesn't have details for the other three. Photo by: Dave Maclean / National Archives at College Park, Maryland

Blackburn wasn't the most celebrated aircraft manufacturer but the Royal Navy elected to name this type the Blackburn, after the city. It was developed from the Blackburn Dart. The RN wanted a three-seat reconnaissance/gunnery observation plane and to make room for a wireless/navigator's station, the pilot was placed above the Napier Lion engine, giving him a good view but a lot of drag as well. This is the first prototype, converted to Mk II standard with a raised upper wing - the Mk I was much uglier still. Both the Mk I and Mk II did see operational service with the Fleet Air Arm. The American caption claims this is a 'Kuwaiti Mirage 2000C' taking off for 'a strike against Iraqi targets in support of Operation Desert Storm', and location is given as Saudi Arabia. However, it's an Emiri reconnaissance aircraft and as far as we can find out, the Emiri Mirages stayed at home at Al Dhafra. The photographer pictured F-16s of the 363rd TFW, which deployed to Al Dhafra, on the same day. Photo by: Perry Heimer / National Archives at College Park, Maryland

A sharp shot - US Navy serial BuNo 122461 is readable on the forward fuselage. Assigned Coast Guard serial 461 is not (yet) worn. Originally ordered by the USAAF as an XR-13 (YH-13), 46-254. The USCG received two HTL-1s, 122460 and 122461, in 1947 which were based at Floyd Bennett Field. One crashed in December 1952 and the second was disposed of in January 1955.
