The Bü 180 first prototype, over Africa? This light aircraft flew from Berlin to Johannesburg and back in 1938, powered by a Walter Mikron engine. The intended 50-hp Zündapp engine was not yet available and a French Train 4T engine had proven 'totally unreliable' according to the Germans. Most Bü 180s used the Czech Walter Mikron. Photo from Walter Bulletin of June 1939. By that time Czechia was occupied by Nazi Germany. Photo from: Walter / Státní oblastní archiv v Praze

First flown in December 1941 as D-AVIU, this Ju 52 was leased and then sold to Aero O/Y by Lufthansa. It was damaged in Malmö, Sweden on 6 July 1943. Apparently it went to Germany for repairs as Ju52archiv says it was impressed by the Luftwaffe and crashed in spurious 'Savoja, Finland' on 23 March 1944 with a German military crew. Repaired. To ABA in Sweden in 1945 as SE-BUE, delivered from Germany? Eventually VH-BUU. This is certainly not a 1950s photo as indicated by the source. The aircraft in the background looks like a (captured) Tupolev SB. Photo from: Finnish Heritage Agency

Siskin fighters lined up at Hendon. First row, J8950, J8664, J8662, J8056, J8666, J8668, J8670 of No 29 Sqn. In second row is J8836 of No 43 Sqn. On No 29 Sqn's previous equipment, the Gloster Grebe, the squadron marking was four crosses. On the Siskin this was shortened to three. The AT-9 twin-engine trainer was difficult to fly and to land. It has been suggested this was entirely intentional, but the aircraft was underpowered and always close to stalling, and was phased out in 1944. It was used mainly to train P-38 pilots. 42-57038 was written off at Yuma Auxiliary Army Airfield No 2 on 25 August 1943. AT-9s were based at Yuma too but the A code points at Douglas Army Air Field, also in Arizona. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

Awesome photograph of a formation of Curtiss AT-9 Jeeps of the 49th Twin Engine Flight Training Squadron, based at Ellington Field on the coast of Texas, in 1942. 41-12150 was damaged in a taxiing accident on 17 December 1942, and written off. This is the very aircraft that is preserved in the National Museum of the USAF, with an irregular dash in the tail number as seen here. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

The S.3 Springbok reconnaissance aircraft of 1923 was advanced in having a monocoque metal fuselage and initally an all-metal wing. Of the five Springboks built, one S.3a Springbok II became the S.3b Chamois, fitted with a more powerful, 450-hp Bristol Jupiter engine. The first flight was from Lympne on 14 March 1927 because there was no land airfield near Rochester at the time. In April J7295 was flown to Martlesham Heath for testing. On 2 July it showed up at the RAF Display at Hendon. The Chamois remained at Martlesham until November but the test results were unfavourable and it seems to have been scrapped soon thereafter.
