The S.3 Springbok reconnaissance aircraft of 1923 was advanced in having a monocoque metal fuselage and initally an all-metal wing. Of the five Springboks built, one S.3a Springbok II became the S.3b Chamois, fitted with a more powerful, 450-hp Bristol Jupiter engine. The first flight was from Lympne on 14 March 1927 because there was no land airfield near Rochester at the time. In April J7295 was flown to Martlesham Heath for testing. On 2 July it showed up at the RAF Display at Hendon. The Chamois remained at Martlesham until November but the test results were unfavourable and it seems to have been scrapped soon thereafter.
