The one and only Viastra I, powered by three Lynx engines. Photo published in Flight in September 1930, before the first flight on 1 October. The aircraft was built by Supermarine in Woolston and barged to Hamble North, where the photo must have been taken. The same airframe was converted to twin-engine Viastra III with Jaguar and then to trimotor Viastra VIII with Jupiter engines. Photo from: Finnish Aviation Museum

Oddly named Księgowy (accountant) as this airframe was a gift of the Polish Association of Accountants to the LOPP paramilitary organisation. Jerzy Drzewiecki designed the RWD-10 as a single-seat aerobatic sport aircraft and fighter trainer. Some 24 examples were built between 1935 and 1938. During the German invasion of Poland, SP-BLZ was used as liaison aircraft in the Kraków area. Photo from: Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe

Of the 177 Wellesleys, the last 80 were serialled in the L block and delivered between February and May 1938. The old Townend cowling ring remained standard issue. Photo assumed taken at the Brooklands factory. We're not sure if the second aircraft on the right is L2656 or L2658. L2652 is on the left. Based at Port Sudan, L2652 did not return from a reconnaissance sortie over Eritrea on 3 July 1940, falling victim to Italian Fiat CR.42 ace Mario Visintini. Photo from: Vickers

The Vickers Vulture was a variant of the Viking, used by Sqn Ldr Stuart-MacLaren for a British round-the-world flight attempt. G-EBGO, c/n 1, was shipped to Tokyo as a spare aircraft. G-EBHO, c/n 2, was originally a Type 92 Vulture II with a RR Eagle engine, but modified to Type 78 standard with a Napier Lion before it set out from Calshot on 25 March 1924. G-EBHO crashed at Akyab (Sittwe, Myanmar). With sporty American help, G-EBGO was shipped to Akyab and Stuart-MacLaren continued on 24 June, reaching Hong Kong on 30 June. This is thus G-EBGO in Shanghai on 24 July. However, G-EBGO was wrecked too landing on the Bering Sea on 4 August 1924. The crew were rescued. Photo from: Hagley Museum and Library

L2637 was perhaps the first of five Wellesleys modified to Vickers Type 292 standard for the RAF's Long-Range Development Unit, but this one did not participate in the non-stop flight from Egypt to Australia. Writing on back of print suggests photo taken on 18 February 1938. Photo from: Vickers

Founded by Charles Townsend Ludington and Wallace Kellett, Ludington Exhibition Co became Ludington Philadelphia Flying Service in 1926, using a new airfield that became PHL. Dallin Aerial Surveys, run by former RAF pilot Victor Dallin, also moved here and apparently made use of this FC-2 too as it is posing here in front of their office with aerial cameras, likely also made by Fairchild. The Bü 180 first prototype, over Africa? This light aircraft flew from Berlin to Johannesburg and back in 1938, powered by a Walter Mikron engine. The intended 50-hp Zündapp engine was not yet available and a French Train 4T engine had proven 'totally unreliable' according to the Germans. Most Bü 180s used the Czech Walter Mikron. Photo from Walter Bulletin of June 1939. By that time Czechia was occupied by Nazi Germany. Photo from: Walter / Státní oblastní archiv v Praze

First flown in December 1941 as D-AVIU, this Ju 52 was leased and then sold to Aero O/Y by Lufthansa. It was damaged in Malmö, Sweden on 6 July 1943. Apparently it went to Germany for repairs as Ju52archiv says it was impressed by the Luftwaffe and crashed in spurious 'Savoja, Finland' on 23 March 1944 with a German military crew. Repaired. To ABA in Sweden in 1945 as SE-BUE, delivered from Germany? Eventually VH-BUU. This is certainly not a 1950s photo as indicated by the source. The aircraft in the background looks like a (captured) Tupolev SB. Photo from: Finnish Heritage Agency

Original colour photo of a Hampden of No 455 Sqn, RAAF, the first Australian squadron in RAF Bomber Command. At this time, the unit had just been transferred to Coastal Command and from Wigsley to Leuchars to train for torpedo bombing. AT137 had been delivered to the squadron in November 1941. The aircraft bunt at Leuchars on 8 June 1942. It had flown 20 operational missions, initially coded UB-O and UB-C. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Siskin fighters lined up at Hendon. First row, J8950, J8664, J8662, J8056, J8666, J8668, J8670 of No 29 Sqn. In second row is J8836 of No 43 Sqn. On No 29 Sqn's previous equipment, the Gloster Grebe, the squadron marking was four crosses. On the Siskin this was shortened to three. Thus the origin of this marking is not a mispaint of a Roman numeral XXIX. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
