Ex 43-49296, to the RAF as KK107 and the AdlA as 349296, before receiving civil registrations F-RAFI, F-RAVA and F-BTDC. At some point the plane joined the Yugoslav Air Force as 71255. It is now preserved with two F-84Gs at the entrance to this airfield, which was visited during a severe snow storm...

This C-47 is preserved near the border between Slovenia and Croatia, where it serves as a monument to a provisional airfield called Piccadilly Hope which was used during World War II to supply partisan troops in their fight against Nazi Germany. Delivered as KG783 to the Royal Air Force in August 1944, it also flew for the French Air Force before it ended up with the Yugoslav Air Force around 1971.

Looking splendid, with the better nose art version, regained code and original serial on the tail. Built as a DC-3 for American Airlines but not taken up, became USAAF C-49J 43-1975 instead. To N87745 in September 1976, after a handful of US registrations and one Mexican. Operated by Southern Cross Aviaton for about two decades as a jump plane, until badly hurricane-damaged. Into the airshow circuit to regain funds spent on restoration; doing pleasure flights at the photo date. Registration modestly in black below the horizontal stabiliser, not visible from this angle.

Parked in front of the museum hangar. From 2008 until about 2012 this former C-49J was wrongly painted with nonsense serials 41-6315 and 41-6531 at the same time, on the left and right side respectively (both obviously based on the c/n). In the mid 2010s it briefly flew with fake serial "411973", but in about 2016 it was finally painted with its correct serial, 43-1975.

"Parashurama" taxiing in at Aero India 2023. It bears the name of the warrior avatar of Lord Vishnu. This Dakota was RAF's KN397, later G-AMSV and N347DK. Donated by R. Chandrasekhar, MP, it joined the IAF Heritage Flight in 2018 after the Tiger Moth and Harvard. The tail number bears a special significance as VP905 of No. 12 Sqn "Yaks" was the first to land at Srinagar on 27 Oct 47 carrying troops of 1 Sikh to save the town and area from Pakistani raiders, marking the start of the 1947-48 Indo-Pak War.

Revisiting Mid-Way after we were there the previous day was rewarded with a lovely golden hour. Looking good in her 'warbirdish' grey company livery, N92578 started life in 1943 as USAAF C-47 42-32802 and was converted into a DC-3 later. She wore a whole bunch of US registrations plus a Bolivian one. Having the nose turret mount removed here but she has one on the belly as well plus three sensor/camera ports.

Revisiting Mid-Way after we were there the previous day was rewarded with a lovely golden hour. This propliner started life as USAAF C-47 43-30631 and her colours seem a tribute to her time as R4D-1 12396 with the US Marine Corps. She did look like she needed some thorough engine maintenance.

Fourteen years after I first saw her, dormant at the Sycamore Strip in the DFW suburbs (a spectacular location for a DC-3 in itself), we met again and she was doing well. Visible is the nose turret mount, as well as oil drip pans for the P&W R-1830s. Delivered as C-47A 42-92555 to the USAAF in January 1944 and passed on to the RAF as KG360 about a week later, early February. Certified airworthy as a DC-3 since 1974.

Ex KNILM PK-ALT. Evacuated to Australia from Indonesia in March 1942 to escape the advancing Japanese army. Leased to the USAAF with the temporary serial 11941 and the radio callsign VHCXD. Later allocated an official serial as C-47H 44-03228. Crashed on approach to Bamaga on May 5, 1945 while transporting fresh meat to Port Morseby. The two Australian pilots and the two American passengers killed. Wreckage remains where it came down about 2½km from the end of Rwy 13. Photo by: Ken Morris
