The Vertol 107 prototype, N74060, first flew in 1958. Before the US Marines adopted the design as the HRB Sea Knight in 1961, the US Army tested three YHC-1A airframes, but the Army opted for a heavier transport helicopter, the Chinook, which was confusingly designated YHC-1B before becoming the CH-47. This was the first YHC-1A. The HRB and HC-1A designations were unified to CH-46 in 1962. 58-5514 assigned to NASA in 1964. Later NASA 533. Airframe withdrawn in 1975 with 685 flying hours, fate unknown. Photo from: NASA Langley

Prototype of a 'personal helicopter' designed by Lewis McCarty and built by De Lackner Helicopters from New York. The US Army ordered a dozen examples of the DH-5 Aerocycle model. Its military designation YHO-2 was soon changed to HZ-1 in a category of its own. It was hoped that the craft could be flown by soldiers after a brief instruction, but it wasn't that easy and obviously the rotor was extremely dangerous to the pilot and bystanders alike. 'Doman Helicopters, Inc, flew its first passengers in a Doman LZ-5 'air taxi' on July 13th, in Danbury, Connecticut. There were seven passengers taking the historic initial flight. The LZ-5 is a commercial version of the YH-31 evacuation ambulance which carries four litters plus an attendant and the pilot.' This was the first LZ-5 prototype, first flown on 27 April 1953. Three were built. 52-5779 was also N13458. It is said that the US Army used 52-5779 and 52-5780 around Washington, DC as VH-31s, but that seems rather unlikely. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

Ex 55 and 255, this Flying Life Boat was reserialled as V115 in October 1934, shortly before CGAS Salem opened. From 1933 to 1936, the Coast Guard's aircraft also wore names of stars, and the absence of its name Arcturus would date this beautiful shot from 1936. The type was retired in August 1941. Constructed of stainless steel. For a flying boat, this at least made some sense, avoiding any corrosion problems. The aircraft was certainly durable: this four-seat prototype, preserved at the Golden Wings Musem in Minnesota, was still reported to be flying once a year in 2015. Five F-5 five-seaters were also built. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

XH498 was part of a three Vulcan flypast that was the star event at the opening of Wellington airport (NZWN). But when it tried to land it struck an embankment. The left main landing gear was left dangling and the Vulcan diverted to RNZAF Ohakea, where the damaged left undercarriage collapsed. C-47A 42-92482 to US Marines as an R4D-5, BuNo 17136, in January 1944. The original caption suggest the Edwards test centre used three R4Ds, one at a time, between 1952 and 1984, and that this was the second one between 1956 and 1979. One of their jobs was to check if lakebeds were dry enough for X-plane emergency landings. Last registration of this airframe, XA-ROM. Photo from: NASA

Shell's attractive Lockheed Orion, flown by Jimmy Doolittle. It was built in Detroit in 1931 as a DL-2A Altair with a metal fuselage. Used as a mailplane by TWA. Following an accident, it was rebuilt as an L-9C in 1932 and sold to Shell. Damaged in 1936, then sold to Paul Mantz for air racing in 1938. The only surviving Orion, it was eventually preserved in Lucerne, Switzerland as "CH-167". Does anyone recognize this airport? On the right is probably a 'Visiting Ships' hangar. The Bendix Model K prototype initially flew with an uncovered fuselage and later with a fully enclosed, egg-shaped fuselage. By January 1947 it was in this form, with an open cockpit. Oddly the Model K and the larger Model J were apparently both named Whirlaway. Bendix Helicopter closed its doors in 1949. NX41817 then went to NACA for rotor research work according to a NASA document. An end date for this is not known to us. Photo from: NASA Langley

The Fairchild 45 was a five-seat executive aircraft first flown in 1935. It was comfortable and easy to fly, yet only 16 F-45A series aircraft were built. One of these, NC16365, was sold to the US Navy as a JK-1. It was used by Rear Admiral King at Anacostia and later on the American west coast at North Island and Alameda. During WWII two more F-45As were impressed as JK-1s and two by the US Army as UC-88s. Fairchild took over Kreidner-Reisner Aircraft at Hagerstown in 1929. Fairchild moved there itself in 1931 and supposedly the Kreider-Reisner name disappeared in 1934. Photo from: Smithsonian Institution

Life's photos from the Long Island Aviation Club are all dated 1937. For most pictures this is credible, with many of the planes new that year and the F-4 Sea Bird, NX16793, sold as CF-BGZ in September. However, a photo of a blackboard with the club's fleet shows dates up to June 1938, so it seems that Eisenstaedt visited twice. NC17177 was cancelled in July 1938 so we put that as the end date for some of the shots. It was last registered to Leech Aircraft of Westchester Airport, NY, which was a Stinson dealer. The fate of this Reliant is unclear. Photo by: Alfred Eisenstaedt / Life
