XH498 was part of a three Vulcan flypast that was the star event at the opening of Wellington airport (NZWN). But when it tried to land it struck an embankment. The left main landing gear was left dangling and the Vulcan diverted to RNZAF Ohakea, where the damaged left undercarriage collapsed. XH498 was repaired and returned to service.Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

XA897 crashed after a very heavy landing in bad weather at Heathrow on October 1, 1956. It had undertaken a flight to Australia and New Zealand and is seen here on its return via Darwin. The crash was controversial because AVM Harry Broadhurst, who was onboard, overruled orders to divert. Broadhurst and the pilot ejected from the crippled jet leaving the rest of the crew to perish. This Vulcan B.1 was retained for tests. First flew in 1957 and in 1962 it was modified for trials carrying the Blue Steel long range missile in its bomb bay, as seen here. It was later used by Bristol Siddeley Engines to test the Olympus 593 as used in Concorde. Obtained from Avros nearly 50 years ago.
