The Paraplane used the "Vacuplane principle" in which the airflow was directed through wing slots to reduce pressure over the upper wing area, thus allowing slow flight and STOL performance. Redesigned as the Paraplane II in 1953. Registration cancelled in 1958. The slogan on the side says "Every field an airport". Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Production of the Ju 86A-1 bomber, powered by Jumo diesel engines, began in April 1936. This one was fitted with BMW 132F (P&W Hornet) radials. This was only meant to be an export option but the radials became standard on the Ju 86E, giving little improvement in performance but much enhanced reliability. On the right is the Fiat G.50 prototype, MM334. Also note the impression of the 40-seat Junkers Ju 90 cabin. Photo from: Fondazione Fiera Milano

The Shark was in some respects more modern than the Fairey Swordfish, but apparently the wing construction was not up to diving. The Portugese navy initially refused to take delivery of its six airframes, ordered for £50,000 in 1935, and they were already withdrawn in 1938 following a fatal accident. The nose numbers then in use were type-based and not unit codes, so this should be s/n 76, which wore nose number 4 already in England. Photo from: Museu de Marinha (Portugal)

Only two prototypes were built of the Go 149, a fighter trainer which, like the Fw 56 Stösser, was single-seat. It was also proposed as a light home defence fighter or light attack aircraft, and here the sign in Italian tries to sell it as a 'fast touring and training aircraft'. This BP photo is believed to be the Great Moscow Circus arriving at Perth for the start of a highly successful tour of Australia. CCCP-75439 was a new aircraft registered in April 1967. Photo date given is 1967. First performance of the tour was in Perth in January 1968 and performers would have needed to acclimatise after leaving Russia in winter for an Australian summer. December 1967 arrival have allowed time for that . CCCP-74539 withdrawn from use in November 1983. Photo from: State Library of Western Australia

The BR.20 bomber was already fighting with the Aviazione Legionaria in the Spanish Civil War at this point. It was considered very modern, and exported to Japan, but the limited output of Italian engines meant that the trimotor Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 was eventually more succesful. On the right is I-EION, a Fiat G.18V airliner. D-ADAA is a Junkers Ju 86 bomber. Photo from: Fondazione Fiera Milano
