This B-29, as 44-61975 was delivered too late to see action in WWII but was used post-war in various training, tarnsport and resupply roles. Its final flight was circa 1960 to the Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD but was fortunately never shot at. NEAM (then Bradley Air Museum) acquired the frame in 1973 but the rear fuselage was found to be extremely corroded so the salvage crew were instructed by the USAF to take the rear fuselage instead of 44-61739. Restoration started in 1998 and lasted five years. The scheme chosen for repaint was Jack's Hack, worn by Tinian combat veteran 44-61566 of the 468th BG of the 58th BW.

Incorrectly painted as 44-70064. This aircraft is a composite airframe, comprising the fuselage of 44-61535, the nose section of 44-70064 and the wings of 44-84084. It was soon repainted with the correct serial 44-61535.

Immediately after the war the USAAF sent this B-29 to Australia so that Australians could see what the famous aircraft looked like and also donate to a War Bond drive. It was re-named 'Waltzing Matilda' for the tour, which included every major city in Australia, as well as many smaller ones. Photo from: State Library of Western Australia

This is the former NACA 137, which was the in-flight launch aircraft for the Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket. Note the Skyrocket launch record board on the nose. Originally delivered to the USAAF in 1945 as 45-21787, then transferred to the US Navy as 84029 in 1947 before joining NACA circa 1949. Withdrawn from use in August 1959 and stored at Davis-Monthan. Acquired by the American Air Museum Society in early 1969, and restored to flying condition at Tucson. Seen here shortly after its ferry flight from Tucson to Oakland, where restoration would continue. First post-restoration flight took place on 27 April 1978.
