Arrived from the factory in primer as G-BEFJ and was modified for iceberg survey flights with 10-inch radar in the nose, camera windows in the belly and fully articulating Cessna Stationair crew seats for comfort on long trips. Built in 1967 and judging by the c/n it would be the first off the line. Crashed inverted on 4 September 1998 at Marietta/PA when an engine failed due to an improperly secured cylinder during maintenance. (The DC-3 behind is CF-CRW of Kenn Borek Air.)

Ex Air Canada and for sale, it later went to Air Cardinal (Photo ID: 105548). Still a nice looking aircraft and this was one of several that had a C-check and went out the door in basic livery. They didn't sell well as there were two things going against them: the air-frame (life limited components) and the engines. Air Canada was one of only two airlines that stubbornly refused to upgrade to the Dart 510 with strengthened reduction gearbox. Instead they muddled along with the failure-prone Dart 506 in which the gearbox could break with catastrophic results. Sadly, most ships were scrapped.

Seen as CF-HWG at Winnipeg in June 1970 but for some reason I didn't get a photo. Exported as N176W in 1971 then re-imported as above and registered on 8 May 1975 with base in Nestor Falls/ON. Serial number changed from KG395 in 1970 and current in 2021 as N99FS. Here a new engine has been installed and these were always filled with inhibiting oil to prevent corrosion while in storage. The first engine run after installation always produced clouds of smoke as the oil residue was burnt off.
