This aircraft was captured at Iraq after a wheels-up landing at Mosul. While ostensibly an Iraqi air force aircraft, it was in reality flown by a Luftwaffe unit based in Iraq. The RAF repaired the Bf110, gave it an RAF serial and flew it to Egypt. HK846 was handed to 267 Squadron for use as a communications aircraft in North Africa. It was to be sent to South Africa to train pilots in German equipment. However HK846 belly-landed in Sudan on the way south and was not repaired. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

This aircraft is preserved at the RAF Museum. The museum's records show air-to-air photos were taken on August 16, 1942 and that is what has been used here. The RAF acquired the aircraft when it made a wheels-up landing at Manston on November 27, 1940, after being shot up in an encounter with a Spitfire. 4101 was repaired using parts from other crashed Bf109s. Flew again February 21, 1941 The canopy was removed to allow a tall Rolls-Royce pilot to fly it and was then mislaid. It was flown without a canopy after that. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Built as a F.1 and converted to an F.2 prototype with a Rolls Royce Nene engine in place of the DH Goblin. The aircraft later acquired two "elephant's ears "dorsal intakes to feed more air to the rear face of the impeller. Buffeting from these intakes created handling problems. It did not stop the RAAF from selecting the Nene, which has more power than the Goblin, for its Vampire fighters. The elephant's ears were eventually replaced by intakes under the fuselage. The French air force also adopted the Nene. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

The Seafang was a navalised Spiteful. The initial production model was the F.31 but only nine of the 150 ordered were built. In addition two of the F.32 version, with contra-rotating props, were built. The Fleet Air Arm preferred the Sea Fury as its fleet fighter because of its better low-speed handling. G-AGRE was built as a Tudor I. It was rebuilt as a Tudor IVB with a longer fuselage and delivered to British South American Airways as "Star Ariel". G-AGRE vanished without trace on January 17, 1949 over the western Atlantic between Bermuda and Kingston, Jamaica. It is one of the accidents cited as evidence of the existence of the Bermuda Triangle. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
