A sad end to a famous aircraft...Following the loss of their Avro X VH-UMF 'Southern Cloud', Australian National Airways Ltd. (ANA) abandoned their interstate services and went into liquidation. C.T.P. Ulm, one of the principals of ANA, purchased Avro X VH-UMI 'Southern Moon' from the liquidators and had it rebuilt in highly modified form for use on route-proving and record-breaking flights. The aircraft was re-registered on 16 June 1933 as VH-UXX Faith in Australia. It's seen here in 1943 in a corner of Townsville/Garbutt aerodrome, rotting away. (CAHS/Stanley Brogden collection)

Originally CH-159 in 1927, it joined DDL (Det Danske Luftfartselskab / Danish Airlines) between roughly 1929-1946 as OY-DED "Esbjerg". It then flew for nine years in Sweden as SE-ASE returning to Denmark as OY-ASE in 1955. Stored in Copenhagen for a while, it was sold to the museum in 1956 and flown to Amsterdam. It has been restored as "H-NACT", a KLM aircraft which was destroyed during the German attack on Schiphol in May 1940. It was later moved to Lelystad as H-NADP

The Fokker F.VII Friendship flew from Trepassey, Newfoundland, to Southampton via Burry Point, Wales with Wilmer Stultz, Louis Gordon and Amelia Earhart as a passenger. The aircraft's owner, Amy Phipps Guest, had wanted to become the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air herself, but when her family objected, Amelia was selected to go in her place. PK-AFB was part of the KNILM fleet until it crashed on February 4, 1938. Sistership PK-AFC visited Australia during the many years Dutch authorities sought approval to add Australia to the KLM/KNILM route map. When approval was finally received, KNILM was using Lockheed 14s and there is no record of -AFB ever visiting Australia. The photo is believed to be at one of the Dutch East Indies (Indonesian) ports used by Qantas on its Australia-Singapore service. Photo from: Hudson Fysh Collection/State Library of New South Wales

Formerly H-NADR an F.VIIa. Converted to F.VIIa/3m when chartered by American millionaire Van Lear Black and reg changed because Black had previously used F.VIIa H-NADP (c/n 4990) for a return flight to Batavia. F.VIIa/3m H-NADP (4992) used for an aborted flight to Cape Town in May 1928. Afterwards converted to F.VIIb/3m with a long-span wing, but soon taken apart and essentially converted back to an F.VIIa, PH-AET (c/n KLM 4). Black ordered a new F.VIIb-3m of his own, G-AADZ, which was initially PH-ADP, but was a new airframe (c/n 5105). Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

Charles Kingsford Smith lands Southern Cross on two engines. Starboard engine shut down when the centre engine exhaust manifold struck the prop (damaged blade pointing down). Port engine then began to run out of oil as -USU headed back to Sydney. Navigator PG (Bill) Taylor climbed out on the struts five times to transfer oil from the dead right engine to the dying left. Taylor awarded George Cross for his bravery. Later pioneered oceanic air routes from Australia to Africa and South America. Smith killed in November 1935.
