The US Navy bought two Blackburn Swift F torpedo bombers. A6056 and A6057 were tested at NAS Anacostia in late 1922 but the Douglas DT was selected. The two Swifts were sent over to San Diego in January 1924. Here we presumably see the aftermath of a mishap on 23 October 1924. A6056 was affected by salt water and struck off charge. The rear fuselage reads 'Blackburn Aircraft, Leeds, England'. Photo by: Joseph Haase / San Diego Air & Space Museum

The first of a small number of Tri-Motors to serve in the US Navy, the sole XJR-1 was the fourth production aircraft. It was first flown on 29 January 1927 and delivered that March, but damaged by a tornado on 18 November 1927. It was written off in April 1930, meanwhile fitted with the rounded wingtips seen here. Following the 1 February 1953 North Sea flood, helicopter crews who participated in the rescue effort were invited at Queen Juliana's palace. Sabena's OO-UBB and the sole Dutch helicopter at the time, the navy's 8-1 (H-1) are seen. Nine American Bells also landed on the lawns and five British helicopters on a nearby football pitch. Howard Hughes in front of his huge XH-17 crane helicopter. It was actually a Kellett design. Hughes converted the original test rig into flyable prototype using parts from other aircraft, including the cockpit section of a Waco CG-15. The XH-17 had two jet engines feeding compressed air to compressed air burners at the tips of the giant rotor blades. It first flew on 16 September 1952 but the media were led to believe they witnessed the first flight on 23 October. The US Air Force cancelled the impractical XH-17 and the planned H-28 development in 1953. Photo by: Loomis Dean / Life
