Navigator Paul Schluter, a seaman, did a great dead-reckoning job but only got $25 of the $10,000 second prize. Pilot Martin Jensen had hired him through a classified newspaper ad and did warn Schluter that he needed any prize money to pay his debts. Situated on an islet in the Oslo Fjord, Oslo's first airport maybe wasn't very practical, but it was surely idyllic! Brand new in the summer of 1936, this Ju 52 was captured by the German army in 1940 and put in Lufthansa service as D-AQUI. Returned to DNL as LN-KAF in 1946. The Paris Air Show used to be held indoors. The participation of the Nederlandsche Vliegtuigenfabriek, better known as Fokker, in the 1921 event was very unpopular among the French public. This did not stop Anthony Fokker from displaying the glider on the left, said to have been designed in Germany as a flying bomb, to be towed by a D.VII. This is unconfirmed, however. Note the model plane on top of the glider. Although painted in full KLM colours, the F.III here never flew for KLM. It was handed over to the Hungarian airline, Malért, here in Paris. After rejecting the three-seat Fokker C.VIII strategic reconnaissance aircraft, the Dutch army air force ordered the two-seat C.IX, a modified C.V. As can be seen here a ventral machine gun could be fitted. The photo date is not known but this is clearly an official portrait of the first machine, 661, taken by the able service photographer at Soesterberg. This machine was flown solo by Maj Livingston Irving, who served with the 103rd Aero Squadron in France in 1918 - note the unit's Indian head insignia.
