The age of the mono-mailplane! On the right is a Northrop Alpha 4A, NC933Y, with Quality Hill in Kansas City in the background. NC12283 was delivered to TWA in May 1933. In 1935, after an accident, the Babb company rebuilt it, against the manufacturer's advice, with a Lockheed Explorer wing for Wiley Post. The hybrid, NR12283, crashed near Point Barrow, Alaska on 15 August 1935, taking the lives of Post and actor Will Rogers. Photo from: Jackson County Historical Society

The Helicopter Engineering Research Corporation (HERC) of Pennsylvania was formed by former Piasecki engineers Drago Jovanovich and Frank Kozloski to build the JOV-3 two-seater. It was the predecessor of the McCulloch MC-4, later turned into the Jovair 4. Early helicopter advertising photographs are fascinating stuff. This one is rather odd, as it looks like the pilot is being flagged down to be breathalyzed! Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

First flown tethered on 15 February 1954, the XV-1 'gyrodyne' or 'convertiplane' had a piston engine that could be coupled to the propeller in flight, but powered compressors that fed air to burners on rotor tips for VTOL. Two small tail rotors were added to improve yaw authority during hovering flight. The second of two XV-1s, 53-4017, was the first rotorcraft to exceed 200 mph (320 km/h) but the propulsion system was found to be too complex. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

The right landing gear collapsed while the helicopter was starting up. A ground crew member was seriously injured by debris. The helo was repaired and would eventually end up with Air Palace, a Korean firefighting operator, as HL9478. Note that Carson Helicopters had another N302Y, c/n 61472.
