The C-33 was a military version of the DC-2 with a cargo door and the DC-3 vertical tail, but the standard DC-2 wing. 18 examples were built. 36-84 was used by a general who commanded the new Spokane Air Depot in 1942. It had an accident at Mines Field (LAX), California on 22 March 1942 and was written off. Presumably it still flew back to Spokane first because it was declared a CL-26 category ground instructional airframe there on 31 December 1943. Assumed to have been taken at Spokane, the photo must have been taken after May 1942 when the red dot in the US star roundel was removed.

The amazing open-cockpit attack aircraft, first flown in 1953! It was designed as a low-cost anti-tank aircraft and only later changed to a counter-insurgency role. During testing it was found to have good rough-field characteristics and to be hard to catch for jet fighters. Photo by: F Dengremont

The A16 was the first Focke-Wulf type, a three-passenger airliner first flown on 23 June 1924. D-659 was converted to A16c standard with a Siemens-Halske radial. Note the cage protecting the pilot. Photo printed in Berlin, location thought to be Tempelhof. D-659 and another A16 were bought cheaply from Lufthansa in 1930 by Wilhelm Przibilla, who based them at Gandau airfield in Breslau (now Wrocław) for sightseeing and taxi flights. D-659 crashed in February 1933, and Mr Przibilla was killed.

'The first German aeroplane to land in England since the war' arrived at Croydon on 1 January 1923. On board were three officials of the new Deutscher Aero Lloyd who visited Daimler Airway to discuss a joint London - Berlin service. The aircraft was the first Do P Komet II, converted from a Do C Komet I. In the background is Fokker F.III H-NABJ of KLM. Confirmation is sought that this is RAF Valley with the railway to Holyhead. No 202 Advanced Flying School, later 7 FTS, was equipped with the new Vampire Trainer here in 1953. A Vampire T11 trainer of Central Flying School, which had some aircraft of this type. If I understand correctly, instructors of Vampire-equipped schools came over to Little Rissington for check flights with CFS examiners or 'trappers' in these jets. Hastings WD485 wears a No 114 Sqn marking and that should date the photo between 1959 and 1961.

The first Junkers G31 delivered to Lufthansa at Croydon after the type's first international flight, via Amsterdam. From a Dutch newspaper I gather that the date should be 1 May 1928. The G31de was powered by Gnome-Rhône-built Bristol Jupiter engines. Aircraft named after the pilot of the Junkers W33 D-1167 Bremen. Later, D-1310 was converted to G31ho with lengthened fuselage and Pratt & Whitney Hornet engines. To D-ADIN in 1934. To German Air Ministry in 1935.

The 110th TFS of the Missouri ANG flew the Thunderstreak between June 1957 and July 1962. From October 1961 it was deployed to Toul, France because of the Berlin Crisis. I don't suppose all these markings were worn at that time, also because the squadron's aircraft were flown by 169th and 170th TFS pilots from Illinois, too, while based in Europe.

In its heyday, Chicago Helicopter Airways ran passenger services between O'Hare and Midway airports, Meigs Field, Winnetka, and Gary, Indiana. The company operated between 1956 and 31 December 1965 when federal subsidies ran out, and tried again between 1969 and 1974. The livery seen here was white, blue and grey from top to bottom with a thin red cheatline and red titles. Later, N867 wore a largely white livery; this is assumed to have been during CHA's second period.

The Bullfinch was a parasol-winged single-seat fighter which strangely was designed in such a way by Frank Barnwell that it could be changed into a two-seat sesquiplane reconnaissance fighter with a stretched fuselage and a bottom wing nailed on. It was an early application of the Jupiter engine, which Bristol took over from Cosmos Engineering. The third and last Bullfinch I monoplane was converted to the sole Bullfinch II biplane and first flew as such on 17 March 1924.

The S-37 was designed as a transatlantic aircraft for French ace René Fonck, following the crash of his even larger, three-engined S-35. The first S-37 airframe, NX1283, was built for Fonck, the second, as seen here, as a night bomber. Sikorsky teamed up with Consolidated at this time. The bomber was also known as the S-37B and was tested by the US Army with the test code (X)P-496, but rejected. In 1929 this machine was rebuilt as an airliner, becoming NC942M and NR942M - see other photos of this airframe by clicking on the constrution number link.
