The Yankee began in 1963 as the BD-1. Designed by Jim Bede as a simple and affordable airplane with removable wings, able to be towed home and parked in a garage. Redesigned to allow certification for production, the company ran into money trouble. Mr. Bede was ousted from the company which was re-named American Aviation and the aircraft emerged was the AA-1 Yankee Clipper. This 1969 built example came to Canada in 1975.

The aircraft crossed the threshold some 60 kts fast and touched down almost half way down the runway, coming to rest 728 feet past the end.
